2007 Stateline Supermoto Challenge @ Primm, NV

Monday morning…

If you didn’t make this race you missed a very great weekend at the pond. But first off, I have to thank my wife, Kim, for a fantastic weekend. She didn’t bat an eye when I would run off to score, or flag, or marshal, or tie sandbags…list continues. Anyway, we had a great weekend seeing everyone. if not each other.

Results…sorry, I don’t have any. And I looked at every scoring sheet! But I will recount highlights as they come to mind.

First, most wicked, fast ski on the pond…winner Hagest on his HS at 64.1 MPH on the start within 200 yards. Can you spell ‘hole shot’? And the actual speed is probably 2 or 3 MPH because I couldn’t track him the entire start.

Jim from Denmark! What a hoot he is. He’s the guy that rode the 650 Kawi both days…his first two days of racing! He rode maybe 35 laps on Friday during the practice hours and then went out there and gave it hell. During his first Moto you could see his huge, wide eyes even thru his goggles! People don’t believe how nasty that water can get! But he was still smiling on Sunday after Moto 1 so I’m sure he’ll be back.

Flores on the SXi Pro superstock! Two really great motos to watch on Saturday! He was only outdone by the HS. After Moto 1 (Pro Am Open Ski) I thanked him for increasing the value of my ski…anyone looking for a wicked fast Pro? Anyway, the HS would thump by, flat on the water and hooked up, and there would come Flo, getting thrust only on touchdown, flying down the straight. And that’s where the HS got him because once Flo was in the Maytag he was as fast as could be, regardless of which ski he was on. His mastery of the ski, any ski, is something I would love to experience once in my life but I know will never happen…

Freestylers; Can you say Ski Clinic in the house? You guys rocked! Thank you for the long drive down here to show us your stuff. I hope you had as good a time on the pond as we had watching you. And I also need to mention Lorin Lowe from Utah. I’ve had the opportunity to watch his progress for several years now and he’s getting really ‘clean’ on his tricks. And his repertoire continues to grow. I didn’t get to see freestyle on Sunday but I think he got third on Saturday which, IMO, was low for the routine that I watched. Regardless, thanks to all you guys!

Blasters and X2s to the line! It always fun to watch these guys. JonnyX2 on the new 800 X2, Leo on his old X2 (750cc), and Jay on the blaster tore it up for two days. There was another blaster and another old style X2 but I didn’t get the racer’s names…sorry. Anyway, watching these craft race brings back many fond memories of PWC racing from years past.

The ramp jump this year was a bit of a let down. I’ll have to take the blame for that. It was not positioned where it should have been and regardless of how we positioned the split buoy and turn buoy, the jump just didn’t offer the advantage that it should have. We did open up the lane on Sunday morning to improve the option but it didn’t appear that the change had much effect. I wish we would have had time to reposition the jump but that was not so.

Ramp jump contest…that wasn’t! I knew having the contest after the last motos might be a problem with everyone ready to get on the road and head home. And I was right. Kim and I even kicked in from our own pockets to get some competitors out there but it just didn’t happen. At least Annie Sims still had her ski in the water and took 4 runs at it. So the winner is; yes, Annie with a 35-foot jump. I’ll do my best to make sure that this contest is offered during the lunch break from now on, where it should be.

Thoughts on staff;

Evan…what a multi-tasker. Computer, two radios, umpteen volunteers, racers with questions or entries, Fire Dept. officials, Herbst Security, me, Maddog, Lisa, Rudedog, Mauler, marshals, kids, dogs, you really would not believe what a zoo the clubhouse was this weekend. And Evan was as even-keeled as could possibly be. I hope the very best for him and I will gladly work with him anytime.

Maddog; there’s no way you can’t love this guy! He loves racers and racing and he will do whatever it takes to keep Pahrump happening for us. He’s always looking for ways to expand the sport and without his year-round effort, we, as a racing community, would lose another race venue.

LisaLisa; Two days on the dock running starts and still a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye. Charming lady! Her love for this sport and the racers is undeniable.

Mauler on the microphone; What a wealth of racing knowledge and experience he has! Our announcing is always top-notch when when he’s on the deck.

Rich Bently; He’s the unsung hero of Pahrump. He spends several days every year setting up the course Thousands of feet of rope, hundreds of sandbags, doglogs, ramp jump, buoys, etc., are all his responsibility to get into place and in a way that is safe for the racers. Honestly, Pahrump would not happen without his tireless effort.

And on the water insuring our safety were Tom, Paul, and Jay. What a fantastic job they did. I was very pleased to see Tom pull up on Friday with his ski. Surgery left him unable to marshal last year so it was great to see him back on the water running the starts. And Jay did double-duty as marshal and racer, getting his blaster on the line for the sport class.

There are many more that deserve credit but this post is getting long. I’ll close with thanking everyone that came to Pahrump to tear up the pond for the weekend. We, the staff, hope you had a great time. And we look forward to seeing you on the line next year!

Later,
Chris
