SOBOBA GRAND PRIX – Feb 8-10, 2008 – By: DAVID RAY
on ThrottelJunkie.com
Crap, I wouldn’t miss this for anything, albeit once again I wont be racing. But heck, its a regular Motocross re-union this is … ahh yes, the legendary “Soboba Grand Prix “… A test of the weekend warriors heart & will, to the pro’s physic and learning curve … Yup, a real Grand Prix, make no mistake bad ass or not, your gonna feel this one. That is if ya buck-up and race it. No matter the cost, its worth the offering.
It’s hard on the body, and equal to your beloved equipment. To those that come out to play, its all worth every glorious moment, win lose or draw. GP means better be pre-paired, body and equipment. One lap on the track designed for this event was “six miles” around, as is the norm for GP’s. And this is not on fire roads, or trails … uh no, not a chance. And yes its true GP’s do in fact typically include a mile of pavement. However, the legendary Soboba Grand Prix is unique. This race was part of the “tough guy” weekend of the past. I wont go into history, but give ya this – the weekend started with a grueling race on Saturday, the day before Soboba!, our MX forefathers are some bad ass guys.
You wont find fire roads or pavement here, what ya do have is sand … lots of it. From the tacky good traction stuff, to the lets make sandcastles or break for a tan junk! You fair best to be on your toes at all times, literally. Keep that front end light boy, and be sure ya got some serious bike squeezing going on. If ya want any skin left on your hands that is.The track as I mentioned was six miles and offered a verity of obstacles and terrain, keeping if fun and exciting. On your way around your gonna find hard pack, silt, rocks, elevation changes as you go up, you go down … and steep, ya got off cambers, sky jumps, rhythms, washes, valleys and more than a few 5th gear pinned sections. No joke, sections begging to be raced wide flip’n open! … Damn, im excited again typing this up.
On that, my boy and ThrottleJunkie.com rider Mike Yellich was utilizing proper technique, the end result – being a fast! With out going into detail (see stats for race info below), in short … Mike was on a mission. Entering and racing two classes, pulling of a 2-5 scorecard I believe. The second gate was a very fast pack I want to add. And all the starts were beyond exciting. As can be expected when ya get 35+ bikes wide coming off a starting line. All screaming down a long and loamy straight … many clicking into 5th gear as they prepare to dive into a left ninety-degree turn that’s only wide enough for four. Ya … the cliché “this is Motocross” comes to mind as I witness the carnage, .. in envy!
Let the games begin … outta the turn and into yet another very long and built to pin it straight. However, don’t get comfy just going fast, its now in deep sand, add in rollers, harsh kickers, steep jumps, and every changing ruts and holes, did I mention the sand going really fast. It was fun no doubt to ride, you can imagine the back wheels kicking about, talking back … and spit’n out a roost to be proud of …
Ok, so in all realty the Saturday races are “only” 4-5 laps or about an hour. Still not for wimps as that’s 24-30 miles of Motocross with out stopping. No worries to win, just entering, having fun and finishing is what its all about! Sunday, well now this is the realdeal, as the race runs for two hours. Put to mind the pros run an average lap times of 10 minutes, you do the math on mileage! Bikes brake at that level of endurance requirement, all kinds of things can happen and they do. More than one engine gave up the ghost … and sadly, #129 Bobby Bonds our pro race leaders KLX was one of them and just before the end was in sight. Bobby got off the bike and just laughed … his only statement – “it happens“, was appropriate. This was a total family event with many pros and history makers showing up, as did Malcolm Smith, owner and founder of “MSR”. Short for “Malcolm Smith Racing” and after his own namesake. Go to any track or race around the world and chances are someone will be sporting MSR gear. Malcolm is no small part to local riding history as well, and I was honored to interview both Malcolm and his daughter, Ashley Smith. I did so for the crowd over the PA speakers for all to hear and cheer him. He’s a great guy to talk to and interview. Malcolm seemed pleased as I mentioned some history … reminding him of a couple guys named Ken and Norm. And how these two would take over Malcolm’s original shop in Riverside, Ca. Seems these guys started using medical gauze that Norms wife, a nurse brought home and used such to make a decent air filter. They came to be known as K&N Air filters … small world. Larry Roeseler and Gordon Ward were a few who came this day, around 20 years later to race Soboba once again. They both raced Sat and Sun. There were others as well, this was history makers about a historic race site. Now I simply love Motocross and very interested in learning more history. Say, if ya wanna know more old time stuff, just hit me up. Ya can also get great history from our buddy C.J. Stewart, ya can email her at sparkplug64@gmail.com. C.J. writes a MX scene section for Valley News and is loaded with great information, and seems to know just about everyone. Ya Find her column at www.MyValleyNews.com Good stuff there, and ya can actually read CJ’s column without an interpreter, as may be required with my own writing. I don’t even have editor … yet
This was great event and allot fun. The amount of people surprised me, yet it wasn’t over crowded. A good show of venders with great food along with MX apparel, Trophykarz..com and many more. Lots of campers stayed overnight, making for a totally great family time. Some went on to create there masterpiece BBQ’s and the likes. The announcers, Mike, Dave and myself, the many promoters, Soboba, Podium Productions www.PodiumProductions.com all made this a kick-butt event. We even had a nice escape for breaks and over night. Our good friend, and ThrottleJunkie regular, Steve Rudnick of GIANT RV (915.232.3048) hooked it up. Along with display rig a 40-foot triple slide fifth wheel bigger than my apartment in
