A largely supportive audience of about 45 people gathered to help Lake Elsinore officials plan a revival of the popular Grand Prix event and avoid any potential pitfalls that could surface in November when racers blast off from the starting line.
The organizers, potential volunteers and city officials cited the need for advance planning, safety procedures and public awareness.
That will require a lot of community involvement in the weeks leading to the Nov. 7-8 event, city officials said.
“We need volunteers to get involved in this project,” Mayor Bob Magee said in his opening remarks at the town hall-style session held last week.
The timing of the event is meant to follow a tradition that was established in 1996 of holding the event on Veteran’s Day weekend.
When asked for a show of hands, 11 audience members indicated they would be willing to serve as volunteer event liaisons. That response was applauded by organizers.
“We’re definitely going to form a [core] committee of either three or five people to help us organize with liaisons for input on these issues,” said Dave Oster, president of Diamond Stadium LLC, which is overseeing race planning efforts. “We’ll meet in a couple of weeks to begin that process.”
