I had the pleasure of meeting Cesear last year at the 2008 World Finals. We had the pleasure of pitting with three Italian riders, one being Cesear, and it was quite a good time. I will never forget that big grin on his face as I tried to pull his red kawi out of the lake. He always had a grin on his face. He would always try to give a few words of encouragement before my races, even though he spoke little english.
Renee’ Hill
After our rider’s meeting last Sunday night, he made a point of greeting with that big smile and an Italian greeting. Every time I passed him on the way to the race track, he would give me a shout of good luck. Last Wednesday, I never realized that it would be the last time I would be able to wish him good luck and a safe race.
As I prepare to come back to the world finals on Friday afternoon, I received word that there had been a crash with a Team Serbian rider involved. My heart sank. Within the hour, I received word that it was our friend Cesear. That was one of the longest 4 hour drives I had ever taken.
Our deepest condolences and tears go out to his family, friends, and fellow Team Serbian riders. Cesear will always have a special place in my heart both on and off the track. Rest in Peace our fellow racer.

7-mile course launches, ends at stadium
MICHAEL J. WILLIAMS – mwilliams@californian.com
The Lake Elsinore Storm’s leaders have hopped onto the driver’s seat in trying to keep the tradition of the Lake Elsinore Grand Prix rolling. The popularity of the annual off-road motorcycle racing series has waned in the past couple of years after the event’s promoter for a decade, Todd “Goat” Breker, unexpectedly bailed out a month before the November 2007 races.
Randy Hiner, the operator of an off-road motorsports track at the southern end of the city, rescued the event that year and put last year’s races on at his track. However, he has relinquished the handlebars this year to the minor-league baseball team’s entertainment division.
Storm Entertainment has become increasingly active in staging events at The Diamond, including the Aug. 12 concert featuring Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp.
The stadium will be the focal point of this November’s grand prix, if the organization can pull it off.
“Randy didn’t want to do it anymore, so the city came to us, because there’s always been some talk about maybe including the stadium,” Storm President Dave Oster said. “They asked us if we’d be interested in putting it on. We looked at it and said we would see what we could come up with.”
What they have come up with so far is a proposed seven-mile track with the race starting and finishing at The Diamond. The course was mapped with the advice of city officials as well as motocross veterans.
From its start, the route would head north along the east side of the lake’s inlet channel, turn west, zigzagging through open land north of the channel. Next the route would bend north across Lakeshore Drive and up Country Club on the hill that was a standard feature of past races. Then it would cross Franklin Street and head back south and east over rugged terrain before heading back to the finish line at The Diamond.
Though the route would require some road closures, it would not take riders through downtown, thereby leaving those streets open to businesses and residents. It also would offer some rigorous challenges to the racers in keeping with the history of the event, which was launched in 1969.
It became so popular within a few years that the city had to shut it down because it was unmanageable, Mayor Bob Magee said. The event was dormant until Breker restarted it in the mid-1990s.
“(Storm representatives) actually went out with our staff and practicing professionals and plotted a course that includes portions of the historic race, so we’re still hanging onto the essence of the grand prix,” said Magee, a racing enthusiast whose son competed in some previous races. “We need to preserve that historical element and create a long-term presence.”
When the races first started four decades ago, they attracted the biggest motorcycle performers of the day. The participation of Hollywood star Steve McQueen brought nationwide attention. The 1971 races, in which McQueen participated along with dirt bike stars Malcolm Smith and Mert Lawwill, were captured for posterity in the documentary, “On Any Sunday.” It was filmed by Bruce Brown, who had directed and produced the renowned surfing documentary, “Endless Summer.” “On Any Sunday” was nominated in 1972 for an Academy Award for Documentary Feature.
“It’s a unique documentary-style film,” Magee said. “It takes you through motorcycle racing in all different forms. And there’s a special affinity because it takes place in our hometown. You see Malcolm Smith roaring down Main Street.”
The hordes who subsequently descended upon what was then a very small town doomed the event in the early 1970s. Now, civic leaders and Storm Entertainment’s management are hoping to resurrect the tradition and attract legions of followers, which could serve to rev up the city’s economy.
The Storm plans on hosting numerous vendors inside the stadium as well as concerts with name rock bands to add diversity to the event, tentatively targeted for Nov. 7 and 8.
“We’re hoping we can make this a little bit more of a family outing, so if you don’t want to sit in the dirt, you can come into the stadium,” Oster said.
There is still a long way to go, however, toward making the plan work, which means attracting financial sponsors, Oster said. That could be difficult, given the economy. The city is not in a position to offer much help given its precarious budget situation, Magee said. A major cost will stem from the security, fire and medical services required at such an event.
Storm representatives have tentatively scheduled a public forum in mid-August to elicit ideas and generate interest in the races.
“It’s going to be a challenge,” Oster said. “We’re still a little bit new at this. We’ve put on events here at the stadium, so we have a good understanding of that. The racing world is something that’s a little bit different and new, but one thing we’ve learned and done well is to find the people who know what they’re doing and create partnerships with them.”

Final events for all classes will consist of two motos. Riders will advance to the final (motos) through qualifying in a heat race and/or Last Chance Qualifier. The rider with the best-combined finish from the two motos will be declared the closed course winner. The Pro Ski and Expert Ski will also use two log jumps on the course, adding a significant degree of difficulty.
Slalom — Racers individually negotiate a zigzag, 283-foot course around nine stationary buoys for the fastest time. Slalom– Expert, Novice, Amateur Veteran Runabout classes ONLY.
Pro, Pro-Am, Sport, Masters, Amateur 14-15 Ski riders compete ONLY in Closed Course races.
Freestyle — Always a crowd favorite, freestyle competitors perform a two-minute routine of watercraft acrobatics, demonstrating skill and form while executing difficult and creative maneuvers. Similar to gymnastics, judges score the routines “Olympic-style,” on a 1-to-10 basis, with 10 being “perfect”. Also scored, competitors will complete a high-flying trick, in the wake of two powerboats. This will simulate a wave action found in surf competition.

Las Vegas is home to some great names in sports, including Andre Agassi, Greg Maddux, Orel Hershiser and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. It’s also home to Rob Flores.
Flores, 40, is a top contender on the international circuit for Jet Ski racing. He’s been the nine-time National Championship title holder, is a three-time Pro-Am World Cup champ, three-time Expert World champ, two-time Japan World Cup champ, the 1995 Long Beach Indoor Arena champ and has taken the U.S. Regional Championship title 20 different times. That’s for U.S. Region No. 1, which includes California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah.
His next competition is the International Jet Sports Boating Association Jet Ski World Finals, slated for Monday through Oct. 18 on Lake Havasu in Arizona.
Competitions can take Flores, who lives just north of Summerlin, across the country or across the world. Each event attracts as many as 10,000 spectators. The sport is popular internationally, too. He races in countries such as Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand.
“I’m going to Thailand in December to race for the King’s Cup,” he said. “I haven’t won that one yet.”
Some years, Flores enters as many as 15 competitions. The purse for each win can mean a check for anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000. His best year brought in $90,000 in prize money.
“I’m not getting rich,” he said. “It’s not like I’m a football player.”
To supplement that income, he holds a supervisor job with a transportation company and repairs personal watercrafts through his own business, www.raceski.com.
Flores’ sponsors include Hydro-Turf, a mat company, Walts Motorsports and Fly Racing. They provide him with a stipend and things such as engine parts.
Tony Beck, general manager of Walts, said the World Finals win carried the most weight in the racing world.
“It’s a very big deal,” he said. “You’ve got 30 to 40 countries represented in a seven-day event.”
Brian Edwards, owner of RO Truck and Equipment, another sponsor, said, “It takes a strong personality to race. You have to have someone with the capacity to handle things when the going gets tough.”
Flores enters races in different divisions, using one of his two Jet Skis. The smaller one is the 85-horsepower “stock” Jet Ski. Its top speed is 52 mph. The larger one has a 220-horsepower engine and goes up to 65 mph. He said it was less thrilling to race the 85-horsepower one after being on the more powerful Jet Ski.
“It’s like cars,” he said. “After driving a Corvette, you don’t want to get into a Hyundai.”
He said the sport is as much mental as it is physical. He hangs back in the early portion of a 10- or 15-lap race, then picks the spots where he’ll pass other contenders.
Racing does not come without risk. Flores tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left leg during the 1994 competition season and didn’t let it slow him down. He kept racing. He’s also torn his ACL in his right leg and broken his wrist.
Flores’ schedule means constantly being on the road. A calendar in his garage is marked with upcoming competitions.
“So far this summer, I’ve driven coast to coast five times, back and forth,” he said.
There is no entry fee for spectators of the IJSBA Jet Ski World Finals.
