Diablo Valley Jet Ski hosts junior slalom races at Salt Springs Valley Reservoir~by Charity Maness   THANKS TO ROBERT OF JET SKI MECHANIC   FOR FINDING THE STORY www.jetskimechanic.com
Junior competition for this weekends’ racing was astounding. Among the competitors was six year old Talon Ace Chambers of Livermore. Talon, being the son of two world champion parents began jet skiing at the young age of three years old. Mother Brenda, 3 time World Champ ’81, ’87, and ’88, was proud of her son and his achievements. Smiling warmly and pointing out that being from a jet skiing family he was bound to love the sport. Father, Art “The Ace” Chambers was World Champion in ’92. ….

Riding #14 was fourteen year old Michael Martin. Michael has been riding for four years, racing on buoy courses. Having never been on an open lake due to his age, he was excited about today’s buoy slalom event on a lake. Though the youth competitors do not know what the winnings will be, they are just excited to be racing “this is their day” says Lambert, they stand to win an Xbox 3, an ipod nano, or a mongoose bicycle.

Mike Yellich from San Diego, aka “Throttle Junkie” (throttlejunkie.com) World Pro 1980’s, volunteered his time in the morning to instruct youth jet skiers jet ski safety, mechanics, inspection, and a slow slalom run through. Highly coveted for his skills, the kids in the program gained knowledge otherwise not available to them.

The youth slalom event was sponsored by Diablo Jet Ski Action and hosted by Salt Springs Valley Reservoir. Youth events are rare due to jet ski laws and regulations. This event was a one time sanctioned event sponsored by DJSA. Owner of DJSA, Jim Lambert, has safety on his mind throughout the whole event with a minimum of three safety jet skis from theskiclinic.com patrolling the event to the guidelines for which one must meet or exceed to enter. He feels strongly about the power of a jet ski, and the mere fact that it has no brakes, being an inherently difficult form of propulsion to master for children. It “puts kids in a position to have maturity they don’t have.” However, with the clinic offered by Mike and the side by side slalom course, this was a way these kids that come out year after year to watch and support their parents and older siblings would have their moment in the sun…safely.

Sunday June 27, 11:00 am at Salt Springs Valley Reservoir, DJSA will sponsor adult jet ski races. There will be a total of 10 classes with 3 heats for each class. Come on out to watch. It is fast, exciting, and exhilarating.

Pleas e note: Salt Springs Reservoir will not allow persons under the age of 16 to utilize their jet ski course. This event was a sanctioned sponsored event.

Junior racers…
It doesn’t matter whether or not you won the X-box3 or the $50 Best Buy gift cards…
The Nano Ipod or the $25 Best Buy cards…
The Mongoose bmx bike or the $100 Best Buy card…

What matters most is you all won the respect and admiration of all of us who got to watch the determination and effort you each put into running that slalom course.
Nothing made me more proud than seeing each of you run the race course one on one with champion instructor Mike Yellich. And nothing made me more proud than seeing your parents and friends cheering you on around every buoy. And a couple of you – took me completely by surprise with your talent.

Young Gun Mike Martin…
14 years old, riding a Seadoo XP with the style, speed, and concentration of Blaine Spires, Justin Black, or Denny Janeway… 46.6 seconds through that course – are you kidding me? Yeah thats right – 46.6 seconds!!! It was just flat out amazing to watch.

and in the 15 to 17 y/o class Young Gun Eli Kemnitz and the Speed Queen of the day Miss Madison Grant – yamaha sj verses kawasaki sxr – separated by only 3 seconds!
Eli Kemnitz rode that ski like he was his hard charging Dad Derrick and all I could do was shake my head in amazement. Eli takes pictures and doesn’t race skis…. not any more he doesn’t! And Miss Madison? At first glance I thought I was seeing Duv Holland, Cinda Freitas, or Kristin Philps out on the water – but it was youngster Madison Grant ripping it all on her own!!!

Miss Mariah Zernik with the same exact riding style of Vanessa Booker…
Will Dewar riding an sxr with the same exact style of John Bonkowski…
Junior Gun Joe Chattaway pushing the waveraider around the buoys with the same style as his Dad! Yosset Shaboeni, first time on a slalom course – and a yamaha 1100, making it look way too easy on that big oversized sitdown!

And the heart warmer of the day? 6 year old wonder kid Tallon Chambers who’s helmet and vest could barely be seen over the handle bar post of a kawasaki 440…
I don’t know what got me more, seeing Tallon’s smile under the helmet, or Brenda Chamber’s tears of pride and happiness from the beach. And if anyone wanted to see a proud Dad, all they had to do was look at Art Chambers standing in 3 feet of water never taking his eyes off his son.

I always tell the adult racers “you don’t have to win to be a winner”, and on saturday June 26th 2010, on the waters of Salt Springs Valley Reservoir, everyone of our junior outlaw racers showed us they were winners regardless of what the stopwatch read… What was most amazing to me, and what I will never forget, is seeing the styles, talent, confidence, and safe mindset you outlaw parents, friends, and coaches have passed onto our future young racers.

To see these kids riding hard and riding safe – with the same qualities and traits you adult racers have passed onto them… man oh man, seeing that right before my very eyes was something that hit me right in the heart and for that – I thank you all for being the role models you are. Congratulations to all our junior outlaw racers…
Just as it is with all our “big kid racers” – the pleasure was all mine and I thank you for that.

Speaking of thanks, very special thanks to Art and Brenda Chambers for opening their camp to all of us for a very special junior awards ceremony – Best Buy for showing some prize luv to our kids – Bomber Eyewear and Freedom Clothing for the same – Mark and Debi Nunes of SSVR for hosting this event – Donna’s Duct Tape Diner for keeping us all fed and cooled down with drinks all day – the entire safety team of Team Orange and scorers Doreen and Mandie for being there for our kids – Traci Cottle and her camera for capturing the amazing shots of the day – and to the dude I wanna be like when I grow up – Mike Yellich, for all you’ve given to the sport as a pro rider, for all you’re still giving to the sport and to our kids…

Whether you’re 6 or 60, (or even in Bill Wilson’s age bracket), you are all the most amazing group of people I could ever hope to meet in a lifetime. Thank you for all you do as parents, racers, crews, supporters, role models, and as the people I am so proud to call my friends…
I got 2 words for you all… Thank You.

Jim Lambert

btw – 20 adult racers hit the match slalom course to do battle. Highlights of that, and sundays incredible racing will be coming up shortly. Hang tight!
