Ronnie Renner’s calling you out…to ride!

Posted by mauler On March - 25 - 2010 Comments Off

Come join motocross superstar and X Games gold medalist Ronnie Renner as he heads out to some of the top off-road riding spots in California. You’ll have the opportunity to ride, hang and rip up the desert sand with Renner, the cast of the Great Ride Open and other FMX legends at a few of Renner’s favorite moto playgrounds.  It’s not every day you get to ride and party with the best.  There is no rigorous schedule, no info booths and no egos…just pure freeriding and awesomeness.  Load up the trucks, bikes and haulers and come be a part of the action at Ocotillo Wells (March 26-28), Glamis Flats (April 7-11) and Pismo, Oceano Dunes (May 28-30).

Come one, come all. It’s camping and riding with Renner and friends in the desert. If this sounds like you or your friends, then come join  Ronnie Renner and Friends.  Keep in mind this is not a “learn to ride†event for you or your friends.  Those heading out should be self sufficient. Camping, riding and your own bike and gear are required.  So leave your mommies at home and plan on howling at the moon with Renner and Friends at any of these riding trips over the next 2 months.

Ocotillo Wells (March 26-28)

Ocotillo Wells is Renner’s favorite playground, making it the perfect spot for the tour to kick off.  Located about an hour south of Palm Springs, Ocotillo Wells is legendary for its desert riding and natural terrain park feel.

A wide variety of off road vehicles can be operated within the park. These range from dirt bikes and ATVs to sand buggies and modified trucks. Any vehicle with a license plate or off road registration may be operated within the park.

Ocotillo Wells is located in Southern California in Imperial County. Take 1-10 East from Riverside County. Take left on 86 S in Indio towards Brawley/El Centro about 50 miles. Take 78 West to Ocotillo Wells. Just before the town of Ocotillo Wells is Cauhilla Trail on left hand side. Take Cahuilla trail about 1 mile. Red Bull Base Camp will be visible on the left.

Glamis (April 7-11)

Red Bull Ronnie Renner Freeride Tour will return to Imperial Country in April for a visit to the Glamis Flats.

The Glamis Sand Dunes are the most popular off-road destination in Southern California. Hundreds of thousands of visitors arrive on various holiday weekends, with estimates that more than one million visitors come every year.  The Glamis Sand Dunes, also known as Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, are located southeast of the Salton Sea in southern California at the border with Arizona and Baja California del Norte, Mexico. The dunefield is a wilderness area, with the only significant human structures being the All-American Canal that cuts across the southern portion from west to east and the Coachella Canal on the eastern border of the dunefield.

Take 1-10 east from Riverside County. Take left on 86s in Indio towards Brawley/El Centro. 86S turns into 78 East. Stay on 78 East all the way until you see the Beach Store and Glamis Flats on the left hand side off the highway. Red Bull Base Camp will be located about a half mile down from the entrance and vendor area.

Pismo Beach (May 28-30)

Red Bull Ronnie Renner Freeride Tour will then head to the Central Coast to ride the Oceano Dunes in Pismo California. This iconic riding playground is considered a hotpot for OHV activity on Memorial Day.

This off road area is among the most popular and unique of California State Parks. The 5 ½ miles of beach open for vehicle use and the sand dunes available for OHV recreation are attractions for visitors from throughout the United States. Oceano Dunes is the only California State Park where vehicles may be driven on the beach.

Oceano Dunes is located just off Highway 101 on the beach south of San Luis Obispo and north of Santa Barbara.

Sit Down with Chris Johnson and Bruce Marada of MTH/SRH/Suzuki

Posted by mauler On March - 20 - 2010 Comments Off

Written by Megan Blackburn

Chris and Bruce, thank you for being with us today! Well, I’m sure I’m not alone in the curiosity of who exactly the new Suzuki team is on Pit Row, so give us a little introduction to the team and yourselves…
CJ- Well I’m Chris Johnson and you can find me on the #354 MTH Enterprises SRH Suzuki RMZ450

BM- Well our team was put together by Chris and I just a couple weeks before the first round. We really didn’t have anything going for 2010 so we both used our resources and put them together and made a team.  MTH stands for Making Things Happen. This is what we had to do to be able to get us to each race and give us a chance at racing in 2010. Making Things Happen!

Chris you have been riding Suzuki for a very long time, rumor was Suzuki pulled out of off-road for 2010, how did you manage to get them on your side?
CJ- Well rumors were pretty accurate and it took a little bit of persuading. About 8 months ago I started testing and doing  R&D developement for Suzuki, it was really important for me to stay on the brand. I thought they needed to have a presence on the west coast and we were a perfect fit. I mention to Mike Webb that I was interested in them being apart of our team and he went to work. We were able to put together a solid program and build a good marketing piece for the company, therefore Suzuki was pumped to be apart of our program. We’re definitely excited to be on the best off road bike out there!

Bruce explain to us how you approached SRH and their initial response to your offer?

BM- SRH had asked me at the end of 2009 to help them find some motocross racers to sponsor and to help manage them for 2010, so once me and Chris decided to build a team I put them on board. They were stoked to be apart of a motocross team and we have huge plans for the season and the near future.

And this silent partner, have they been involved in racing before?
CJ-This “silent partner” has never been involved in a race team or anything like that before. It’s a family and they are stoked just to be able to help and build a solid program for Bruce and I. It’s the Fingerlin family and they have basically taken us under their wing. I couldn’t thank them enough, I’m like apart of the family and they have made a huge commitment and sacrificed a lot so we can be out there racing. Its a lifestyle and having them at the races makes it that much better.

BM- Bob fingerlin is the silent partner and he raced a little back in the day but just really started to get back into it. Him and his family just love the sport and want to help give us a “push”.

Since you both come from a strong motocross background, how and when did each of you take a liking to offroad racing?

CJ- I would do local offroad races here and there when I was little growing up. Riding in the mud at Washougal, banging bars in the trees. My first worcs race was in 2001 and the whole atmosphere was great. I ended up winning and we decided to do a few more, I was hooked from the start and we did as many as we could. In 2003 I recieved help from Team Green and that pretty much started my off road racing career. From then on it has been an up and down road, racing amateur motocross, Outdoor Nationals, and Supercross. I’m back where I belong, racing off road.

BM-I have always liked offroad racing, knowing how much of a challenge it is, and that is what I love….a challenge.

You guys had a great debut for the season at Speedworld MX in Surprise, AZ! How did that race go personally for you both?
CJ- Overall the first round went pretty well. I rode strong and charged to the end. I made a few big mistakes that cost me but thats racing. I had minimal time on the bike before the first round so I was happy with the result.

BM- Well I can’t complain due to to the fact that we finished safely and in the top 20 but I do have a lot more in me and the crash that I had 2 days before the race didn’t help but I’m looking forward to working up to being in the top 10 at the next races.

What are your goals this season personally and with the team?
CJ- Personally I want to be up front. My goal right now is to improve each race and get into the top 5. As far as the team, I want it to build and be a strong, respected team. I want to be able to go to companies and they know exactly who we are and want to be apart of it. Right now its at a personal level and were getting support based on who we are as individuals. Obviously its always going to work like that to a certain extent, but to be able to put a proposal together and go to companies based on the team efforts and what we were able to do as a whole is the main goal.

BM-My goals are to finish every race and have a safe season and to grow our team even more for next year.

Aside from WORCS, can we look forward to any other racing from the MTH/SRH/Suzuki team?
CJ- Of course. We are going to race as many outdoor nationals as we can and possibly a few Endurocross’s. I’m planning on racing a 250f in Lites class and Bruce will be on the 450 racing the motocross class. We will always be at misc local events around Southern California and we may do Mammoth.

BM-Yeah, I really want to try some of the outdoor nationals on the west coast in the 450 class, and I love doing random Grand Prix’s and whatever else comes up.

If all goes well, could this team become a long-term investment that we’ll see around or many years to come?
CJ- Yeah that’s the goal. I’m not just riding for the team. I’m also behind the scenes on the phone, doing emails, corresponding with different people trying to make this happen and grow. My goal is to build the team and create opportunities for not only myself but for others as well.

BM-Absolutely, we are looking to expand every year and hopefully some day have an amatuer program and some more pro riders. I am in this for the long haul, and am excited for the years to come.

Who would you boys like to thank?

CJ-A big thanks to my parents and everyone that has supported me in the past, the Fingerlin family, SRH, Suzuki, H2O Overdrive, Everyone at Dr D, Thor, The Schmoke family at Custom Decals, Scott Obrien at Jims Auto Sales, Race Tech, Sheehan Construction, Tagger Designs, Kicker, Bonic Evolution, Maxima, Leatt Brace, Flexx Handlebars, Zip Ty Racing, Devol, Dunlop, GPR Stabalizers, Smith Optics, Hot Cams, Vertex Pistons, IMS, San Diego Powder Coating, ODI, and One11 Ink.

BM- I would like to thank, SRH, Suzuki, MTH, H2O Overdrive, Thor,  Dubach racing, Tagger Designs, ODI, Race Tech, Fasst Company, Maxima, Duvall Engineering, Custom Decals, Bionic Evolution, Hot cams, Vertex pistons, Escondido cycle center, OneOne1 ink,Ims,Hinson Cluth components, Leatte brace, and the Fingerlins for all there help to make this whole team possible. And my smokin hot fiance.

Well it’s great to see you boys out there and working hard. Goodluck and we’ll see you in Lake Havasu, AZ.

CJ-Thank youuu! Havasu should be good!

BM- Havasu is a race that im really looking forward to and it should be a good time. I enjoy racing the WORCS series, it is a great family fun event with great racing, and elements that seperate any other racing type apart. We have enduro sections with logs, rocks, tractor tires and whatever else they think of. The races are 2 hours long and very exciting

Kawasaki’s Austin Kimbrell starts LOORRS season on podium.

Kawasaki’s Kimbrell Starts On Podium
March 16, 2010

Irvine, CA – Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Austin Kimbrell showed the UTV Unlimited class that he and his Kawasaki Teryx™ are podium-worthy, earning the pole position during Friday’s qualifying and then going on to finish second in Saturday’s Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Even with a broken throttle cable during Race 2 on Sunday, Kimbrell acted quickly and was able to come from second-to-last and finish just off the podium in fourth. Muzzy Kawasaki’s Robert VanBeekum had a good showing on Sunday with a second-place finish, while reigning UTV Unlimited champion Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Chad George finished 4-5 for the weekend.Monster Energy Kawasaki Under the Tent

Starting Fresh
With two seasons under his belt, Kimbrell came into the season not sure where he stood against the competition. Friday’s qualifying put Kimbrell on top with a time almost one second faster than his closest rival and in good position for the weekend of racing. In Saturday’s eight-lap race, he was out front nearly the whole race, but finished second after a minor water pump issue.

“At the first race, you don’t really know where you are going to stand up against everyone,” said Kimbrell. “We went out pretty good last year and since we went with the same motor package for this season, we thought we would do well. We were definitely relieved that our work paid off.”

Quick Thinking
During the second race on Sunday, Kimbrell jumped out to the holeshot, but on the second jump his throttle cable broke. He used quick thinking to use his hand to push in on the throttle body. With one hand on the throttle body and one hand on the wheel, Kimbrell worked his way through the field to finish in fourth.

“It was not the easiest thing to hold the throttle body and steer with one hand,” said Kimbrell. “I did get a little break since we had a red flag and the mandatory caution. It wasn’t too fun, but being able to still race and not DNF was the positive side to it.”

Looking Ahead
George used his experience to get him through the first weekend of racing, as he faced different challenges in each race. After qualifying third on Friday, George’s first race didn’t go according to plan after he lost his front wheel drive on the first lap. He was able to pull through for a fourth-place finish, despite his troubles. On Sunday, the set-up didn’t suit George and he played it safe for a decent running to fifth place.

“This weekend didn’t really go according to plan,” said reigning champion George. “We made some changes that helped us in the long run, but hurt us a little this weekend. Going into the next race, we already know what to change and what our speed will be. I definitely want to get back on top of the podium.”

Motocross Training & Rowing

In motocross, athletes are always looking for a new and better way to train. The tried and true method for cross-training in MX has always been running: it’s convenient, portable, and easy to do. But for many, all that pounding is hard on the knees and shins.

The Concept2 Indoor Rower is a great cross-training tool for MX. Using the indoor rower provides both upper and lower body conditioning while working the cardiovascular system. Incorporating total body movements with intense cardio action, combined with portability and ease of use, the Concept2 Indoor Rower is a great piece of equipment that all MX athletes should have.

Rowing already has firm roots planted in other forms of motosport like the Indy Racing League and Nextel Cup Circuit and is a fixture in gyms throughout the country. So, what are you waiting for?

Motocross to Off-Road: The Best Train on Concept2

“My concept is simple: I respect time, and if I can give my riders an advantage by putting them on a piece of equipment that is the best time spent to get their bodies into top form, I want that piece of equipment! That is why I use the Concept2. It is honestly the best replication of racing a dirt bike, and it allows us to train hard while maximizing time efficiently!” —Steve Hatch

Norcal Jet ski Racing update

Posted by mauler On March - 15 - 2010 Comments Off

In regards to DJSA races in norcal, I will post tentative dates, class structures, and general info
on a new thread tonight after I get home from work. This one is getting a little confusing but for the quick version…

In summary ~
We will be running an 11-race closed course point series
a 4-race enduro series
8 “550 xtreme All Out” exhibition races
and a rematch of the norcal / socal shootout in november

1st race of the closed course series will be for double points – sunday, 4/11/2010, at SSVR Copperopolis.
The 550 xtremes will also make their debut at this race.

On Sunday March 28th – I’d like to run time trials by class to get a feel for where everyone is at.
A few guys might be bumping up a class this season, and time trials will help me determine
those changes as well as “help you” qualify for your startline position at the first race of the year…
The 28th might also be a good day to run a few of those australian pursuits many of you have been asking about!

I think March 28th is the Dana Pt to Avalon enduro in Socal.
Any Sprint or SCXP racer planning on competing – please let me know as soon as possible and I will adjust the time trial day accordingly.

More info tonight.
Stay safe

Jim
