East Coast stops dominate PWC National Tour

LAKE HAVASU CITY — Lake Havasu may be the personal watercraft capital of the world, but to get here, racers have to head east.

Kay Sykes Photo/Special to News-Herald. Racers wait for the start in Sport Class during the 2010 World Finals, on Lake Havasu, Oct. 8, 2010. Riders that want to make it to the 2011 World Finals are taking part in the new National Tour, racing along the East Coast.

The western-most stop on the new PWC National Tour is Racine, Wisc. in mid-June and local riders are making their way to the East Coast to have a shot at racing at the sport’s showcase, the IJSBA World Finals on Lake Havasu, Oct. 1-9.

The geographic shift is courtesy of A.J. Handler, the founder of Upstate Watercraft Promotions, Inc. and the promoter of a series of races in the Northeast portions of the U.S. — known to racers as Region 8.

With no national tour scheduled for 2011, Handler and UWP partnered with the International Jet Sports Boating Association to produce the UWP-IJSBA Watercross National Tour, as a starting point to rejuvenate watercross racing across the country.

Handler said the mission of the UWP is to promote the positive image PWC riding.

“This includes, navigational and local boating laws, which we encourage all riders to obey the local, state and federal regulations. UWP promotes organized and supervised PWC events in a professional manner. All of our events are sanctioned by the IJSBA, which serves as an international governing and sanctioning body for Personal Watercraft racing,” he said.

The 2011 National Tour consists of eight stops, starting May 14-15 in Panama City, Fla. The second round is this weekend in Montgomery, Ala., followed by the Grand Prix of Watercross, June 18-19, in Racine, Wisc.; Rochester, N.Y., July 9-10; and the Canadian Nationals, July 16-17, in Belle River, Ontario, Canada.

The final three rounds head south to the warmer climates. Starting with the Liberty Cup in Colonial Beach, Va., July 30-31; followed by the Triple Crown of Watercross, Aug. 13-14, in Anderson, S.C.; and the Governors’ Cup in Charleston, W.V., Aug. 20-21.

Handler has structured each event to have racers compete in three motos over two days. The first two motos of closed course racing for each division, determines placement in the final moto on the second day.

“The reason we do this is to showcase our professional athletes over the weekend with set times, and an autograph session following each Moto. This allows the event spectators to get up front and personal with the athletes,” Handler said.

The National Tour also features a Freestyle competition, held at noon each day of the event weekend.

Any individual, starting at the age of 10, who is interested in participating in a regional or national race, may do so. After competing in one regional or national race they are then qualified to participate in the 30th annual IJSBA Quakysense World Finals, in Lake Havasu City, Oct. 1-9. A racing license is required and may be obtained through the APBA — at http://www.apbaracing.com — or the IJSBA — at http://www.ijsba.com.

For a schedule of National Tour events and race results, go to http://www.uwpinc.com.

DJSA cordially invites you to the first annual West Coast Match Slalom Drag Outlaw Jetski Championships in Suisun City California, benefiting Hospice of the East Bay, and Meals on Wheels. A slightly different version of traditional match slalom courses, MSD racers will race on side by side slalom courses each including a 50 yard drag straight-a-way to a 180 left turn single buoy – and drag 50 yards back to the entrance of a tight 8 buoy up and back slalom course. One course is yellow. One course is red. Each racer will run both courses for a combined time. The fastest times advance. The slower times go to a LCQ for a final shot at making the final afternoon rounds.

The race site is located at the beautiful Suisun City Waterfront directly off HW 12.

Fastest 850 expert standup racer of the day – $400
Fastest SCXP/Sprint racer of the day – $400
Fastest Sport Sit racer of the day – $400
Fastest X2 racer of the day – $200
Fastest 800 nov/int standup racer of the day – $200
Fastest 650 and under standup of the day – $200
(additionally, each MSD class champion will have a $100 donation made to Hospice or MOW in the racers name by DJSA)

* All djsa racers will receive 10 bonus series points for participating in this meaningful event.

* Trophies and bragging rights will be awarded to the top 3 from each class.

Invites are being sent to local Sacramento and Bay Area television and radio stations, as well as local corporate businesses in the hopes of generating a “media-corporate challenge” showdown. Entry fees from the media stations and corporate businesses will go directly to the Hospice and MOW donations.

Both Hospice and Meals on wheels are expected to be onsite, and will cordially hand out information and answer questions about their perspective organizations. Most everyone knows my Dad passed away in December after an unexpected and brief fight with cancer. My family never saw this challenge coming and we were totally unprepared when it arrived. The caring and support from the staff at both Hospice, and Meals on Wheels, is something that I continue to thank God for every night – and I cannot begin to describe just how much they do for families in similar circumstances.

Right now it’s difficult for many of us to imagine, but there are hundreds of people who can no longer drive to the store, or go to In and Out burger on sudden impulse. They can’t go out to nice restaurants for anniversaries, birthdays, or family holidays because they are usually confined to a bed or a chair in front of a TV, and all they can do is remember what “used to be”. That knock on the door by a meals on wheels volunteer isn’t just the delivery of a complete hot meal – but much more importantly it’s a visit by a caring person who spends a few minutes checking up on you and seeing if there is anything you need. For many people who are alone, this visit is the highlight of the day because they are reminded that people still sincerely care about them…

Both of these organizations are made up of hundreds of special people who volunteer their time to ease the pain and suffering of those in need, and I sincerely thank you in advance for joining me in recognizing their efforts – and in attempting to generate donation support for both these invaluable community services. My hopes are that the first annual west coast match slalom drag championships are fun for everyone – but more importantly I hope this is a significant way of saying “thank you” to some very well deserving people.

Rius, Mauldin take class wins at indoor PWC races

LAS VEGAS — There was no room for error when the green flag was dropped.

Kay Sykes Photo/Special to News-Herald. 18-year-old Derrick Kemnitz Jr. entertains the crowd during the H2X Indoor Watersports Show held at the South Pointe Casino, in Las Vegas, Friday and Saturday.

Personal watercraft racers made their way around a converted indoor rodeo arena, for the H2X Indoor Watersports Show at South Pointe Casino in Las Vegas, Friday and Saturday, racing a 400,000 gallon, man-made lake just three and a half feet deep courtesy of Grindco Entertainment

The athletes stood waist deep in the water, with no holders and dead engine starts, in a pool that was only 120 feet wide and 150 feet long.

Round one of qualifying Mark Gomez, Pete Zernick, Craig Warner and Ian Roberts took to the line. Midway through the moto Warner was knocked from his ski while being passed by Zernick, leaving Zernick and Gomez in the transfer positions.

The rough waters would make two foot waves, leaving only a foot and a half of water left for the ski’s to remain hooked up. Gomez hit a whole and the waves just swallowed his ski, filling it with water and killing the engine just inches from the start/finish line. Unable to get the ski started again he gave the transfer spot Roberts.

Qualifying continued, transferring Pete Zernick, Nicolas Rius, Adam Abadie, Ian Roberts, Keifer King and Jeff Troegner to the main event.

With six skis on the line the small lake looked even smaller. More waves made the waters more treacherous. For seasoned professional Rius, it was almost a walk in the park, giving him the overall first place finish on day one of racing.

The sport class had the spectators on the edge of their seats as the larger watercraft went rail to rail with each other vying for position in the main event. The heavier craft seemed to have an easier time staying planted in the water, but not any easier maneuvering around the buoys.

Bill Miracle was able to have a flawless race on the first day taking the overall win on Friday night in the sport division, followed by Casey Mauldin.

Races on Saturday went much easier for the athletes as they were more aware of how their watercraft was going to handle in the choppy water. Mike Klippenstein, of Alberta, Canada, changed his craft from his custom Hydrospace to a stock SXR.

“I just couldn’t keep the supercharger spooled up and had to make the change,” Klippenstein said.

The ski class didn’t have the same line-up in the main as it did on Friday. Rius, Klippenstein, Cody Copenhaver, Craig Warner, Jeff Troegner and Gerry Wong all battled the waters to get to the final race of the evening.

Warner was able to capture the first place position on the main followed by Klippenstein. Rius was crowned champion for the weekend despite his third place finish in the main, because Warner and Klippenstein had failed to move on to the main event the previous day.

Overall results for the sport class gave Casey Mauldin the championship for the weekend. Bill Miracle received a second place finish because of a missed buoy.

#2nd round of the CalROCS Rockcrawling 2011

Posted by mauler On May - 18 - 2011 Comments Off
CalROCS ~ Oroville, CA May 14~15, 2011

BSW Racing would head back to Surplus City in Oroville, CA May 14 ~ 15, 2011 for the second round in the CalROCS Rockcrawling 2011 series. This time it would be Aaron’s turn to take on the Concrete in the #12 AJ’s 4×4 built Pandora buggy, with Joe spotting.

Kurtis Harryman with CalROCS rockcrawling, was determined to put all the competitors through their paces, as Kurtis put it “this is my event, they are going to have to work for it, this weekend”. Team BSW did, from having to top the lower section of the terminator, running down the quarter pipe, tight technical challenges, and new to CalROCS speed section, the event obstacles were unique and challenging.

Round 2, would see the return of Mike Turner, and the introduction of Rob Kaufman, to the Super Mod class. The teams usual competition Derek Trent was sidelined due to knee surgery.

The first day of competition, the team found themselves fighting a transfer case gremlin. They would run the event without 4wd low, but the Raceline, Napa buggy would still run strong, finishing the first 3 courses with very low scores. It looked like Aaron and Joe would run away with the day.  But as all competitors know, one course can change everything, and it did.  The final run of day one would be on the course that started off with the now conquered quarter pipe that just a week before Justin Hall took his unlimited buggy to the top of, but this time they would be running down this steep drop off. The buggy handled that first obsticle with style, but a sharp right turn through a crack lined by a tree, would end the run for Aaron and Joe, unforturnetly mother nature would prove to be an obstacle that the team couldn’t beat with the tree stopping their progression. They would end the day tied for first place. A front shock hoop got crushed on the quarter pipe course. BSW would like to thank Brian Tilton and everyone at Ruff Stuff Specialties for helping them out with parts, Jim and Kevin Brown with Relentless Motorsports for letting the team use their generator, and Kurtis Harryman with CalROCS for the welder. With everyone pulling together the team was able to make all the neccesary repairs and continue with the weekend.

Aaron and Joe, taking 2nd place for the first time this season in Oroville, CA at the CalROCS Rockcrawling event

Sunday would start out wet and sloppy, making the obstacles very slick, but that wouldn’t slow BSW racing down a bit. The most memorable course of Sunday’s run was the third of the day, the course consisted of two pits with a speed section between them, the first pit was handled with ease, and the speed section of the run was fast, the second pit had become a mud bog due to all the weather.  Joe put his winch line skills to the test, doing all he could to help pull Aaron up the wall out of the bog. Coming very close numerous times, the obstacle highlighted the strength and team work of BSW racing. The run would drop the team to second on the day.

When asked about the event, Aaron and Joe were all smiles, as they both said “running on the concrete was awesome, thank you CalROCS and Surplus City for a great event, we are really looking forward to coming back in August, the technical aspect of this venue really favors our buggy, and it will be great to run when it’s dry.”

Through the rain, sleet, and marble size hail, team BSW finished, wet, cold, and muddy, but with smiles on their faces, a second place finish for event, and standing in 2nd for the season.

June will be a busy month for the team. Joe in the #8 buggy will be taking on the NorCal Rockracing courses in Prairie City, CA the 18th and Aaron will be running the #12 the weekend of the 25th in Donner, CA. Greetings!
Ronny Mac pics

Our first winner of the year didn’t come from the racing side of the weekend’s competition but from the Hydro-Turf Freestyle Competition.  Jason “the Destroyer” Stoyer built on his stellar performance Saturday and easily took the win.  Stoyer used a borrowed boat on Saturday but on Sunday he had his own rig and he launched quite a few back flip variations along with a huge under flip that he landed flawlessly.  Jeremy “Parr Diddy” Parr tried to match “the Destroyer”, but Parr was also on an unfamiliar boat and came up short on his signature trick, the Pinwheel, and had to settle for 2nd.  Parr Diddy declared “we’ll get him next time!” Michael Ratti showed why he is a former amateur national champ and put up a rock-solid performance on his way to a 3rd place finish. Make sure you check out the latest from Hydro-Turf!

In the Ski GP class Chris “The G.O.A.T.” Macclugage capped off his return to the national stage with a sweep of all three motos.  Macclugage won in convincing fashion and there is no doubt everyone else will have to elevate their game to catch the Factory Yamaha rider.  The defending national champion in the Ski GP class, Rob “Flo” Flores had his share of difficulties this weekend, including a mechanical issue that forced him to use his stock boat in the open class, but he was still able to salvage a second overall and keep himself right in the thick of things in the chase for a national title.  Jimmy “Eats World” Wilson had his own set of issues and ended up riding a boat decked out in pink, but that didn’t deter the Hurricane Racing rider from getting a podium finish on the first weekend of the year.  It was a great opening round on the UWP-IJSBA Watercross National Tour and we are looking forward to the U.S. Open of Watercross in Montgomery, AL on Memorial Day weekend.  Become a fan on FaceBook at uwpinc.com and check your local listings for the national television broadcast of this race on the Beach Sports Network.

The Pro-Am Runabout Open class was filled with carnage and going into the final moto the top three positions were still up for grabs.  However once the flag dropped for the start Dustin “El Diablo” Farthing wasted no time making it clear he would be a force to be reckoned with all season.  Erminio Iantosca was able to take the holeshot and hold the lead for the first lap, but Farthing got under “The Boss of Watercross” on the first turn of lap two and never looked back, lapping the entire field en route to his first overall win of the season.  Brian Baldwin rode consistently in all three motos and was able to sneak past Iantosca for the second spot on the box and the defending national champion had to settle for 3rd aboard his RIVA Racing powered ride.
