30th anniversary celebration to include Parade of Nations, IJSBA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz.—Following a recent unanimous vote of approval from its board of directors, the Lake Havasu City Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB)has allocated special funding for the third straight year to help market and promote this year’s 30th Annual quakysense International Jet Sports Boating Association (IJSBA) World Finals. Featuring the best personal watercraft racers from around the world, the 2011 quakysense IJSBA World Finals will be held on Lake Havasu from Oct. 1-9.
Returning to Lake Havasu for the 30th consecutive year, nearly 700 entries from nearly 40 U.S. states and nearly 40 nations annually converge on Lake Havasu along with news media from a dozen countries to participate in and cover this world-renown special event.
“For three decades now, Lake Havasu City has been the epicenter of personal watercraft racing around the world because of the IJSBA World Finals and we are honored to once again partner with the IJSBA,” said Doug Traub, the President/CEO of the CVB. “The economic impact of this event is off the charts and we aim for it to gain an even wider reach than it has achieved in the past.”
Sanctioned under rules of the IJSBA, with world headquarters in Half Moon Bay, Calif. and produced in association with Jim Russell’s DSM Events of Lake Havasu City, the quakysense IJSBA World Finals of personal watercraft racing is one of the world’s most unique and spectacular sporting championships.
The massive racing extravaganza will again be held in the shadow of the original London Bridge on the offshoot waters of the Colorado River.
“It has always been a natural fit for the IJSBA to work in partnership to promote this event with the CVBBureau and we sincerely thank them for their continued support and belief in our efforts and our event ,” said Scott Frazier, Managing Director of the IJSBA. “We are looking forward to celebrating with Lake Havasu City the completion of three decades and the start of our fourth in October in this great destination resort.”
The race site for the 13th consecutive year will be at the purpose-built Aqua Stadium on the grounds of the Crazy Horse RV Campgrounds and Resort.
A veritable salute to personal watercraft and the youthful lifestyle it represents, the industry’s biggest week will include several distinct championship events. Starting the week will be the 2011 IJSBA Novice National Finals and Masters World Finals, followed by the 2011 IJSBA Expert and Amateur World Finals and concluding with the featured 2011 IJSBA Pro and Pro-Am World Finals (Oct. 7-9).
Freestyle athletes will compete in the IJSBA Amateur Freestyle World Finals on Friday, Oct. 7 and the IJSBA Pro Freestyle World Finals with qualifying on Saturday, Oct. 8 and finals on Sunday, Oct. 9. The event offers free admission to the main stadium area Performance Alley-the World’s largest PWC Trade Show, which features more than 40 individual vendors of the leading performance companies for watercraft, side by side and other power sports. OEMs will unveil their 2012 models.
Two of the event highlights will be the annual Parade of Nations ceremony (Oct. 6) and the 2011 IJSBA Hall of Fame Induction celebration (Oct. 8). Lake Havasu City mayor Mark Nexsen will participate in both events which will be held at the London Bridge Resort and Convention Center.

LAKE HAVASU CITY — One of personal watercraft racings top athletes started out as a teenage phenom — just not in his specialty.

Submitted photo courtesy of Dana Martini. In this undated photo, freestyler Eric Malone performs one of his signature tricks, the Flat Water Back Flip. Eric Malone will return to Lake Havasu City for the IJSBA World Finals, Oct. 1-9.

Eric Malone burst onto the scene of personal watercraft racing at the age of 15, racing both stand-up and runabouts, with a little freestyle on the side just for the fun of it.

During his childhood he and his family spent his time at a Pennsylvania resort near his hometown of Duncansville, where he enjoyed all sorts of water sport activities. During that time in Malone’s life he had the privilege of enjoying the sport when it was being aired on ESPN.

In 1994 he won his first national amateur freestyle championship. The following year he went on to win his first world championship in the amateur division and by 1996 he turned professional.

His first year as a pro, he finished sixth place in the pro ski class at the national level, and fifth in pro freestyle at the World Finals.

Although Eric enjoyed racing very much, in 1997, he made the decision to place his focus 100 percent on freestyle. That focus allowed him to capture his first World Championship, defeating Rick Roy, at the age of 20.

This set the stage for the next decade. Malone dominated the Pro Freestyle circuit, winning eight World Championships and 10 U.S. National Championships.

He has stayed on top of his competition in all aspects due to his hard work and devotion to research and development. The led him to create countless new freestyle tricks that are seen in competitions still today, including a no handed barrel roll and the flat water back flip, including the first ever triple back flip.

His innovation extends off the water, as Malone has created lightweight state of the art freestyle PWC hulls. The E.M.E. hulls can be seen in action at the 2011 Quakysense World Finals, with sponsored freestyle athletes Lee Stone, from the United Kingdom, Vaclav Zacek, of the Czech Republic, and Michael Ratti from the United States.

Malone has also utilized his watercraft skills for rescue efforts during the devastating floods, in 1996, near his hometown in Pennsylvania. For his heroic efforts, during a special ceremony at the White House, President Bill Clinton awarded him a special commendation.

Along with other successful athletes in the sport, like Larry Rippenkroger, Malone has stepped into the world of film making, performing as a stunt double in movies such as “I am Number Four” and “Into the Blue”. He has also produced his own DVD’s “Rampt” and “On Edge”.

“I have dedicated my life to this sport since I was 14-years-old. It has been a journey that I have understood to be never ending with competition and devoting effort to build engines, hulls and equipment for the athlete to excel and bring new tricks to our sport,” said Malone. “My career has been blessed.”

Malone said he also enjoys assisting fellow riders to reach new levels in the sport he loves so much. Once again Malone will be holding a freestyle clinic during the 2011 IJSBA Quakysense World Finals in October.

For information on attending the clinic, visit the IJSBA website at http://www.ijsba.com or Malone’s website at http://www.ericmalone.com.

Mike Metzger critically injured

Posted by mauler On July - 19 - 2011 Comments Off

The ‘Godfather” of FMX has been critically injured and is currently in hospital in “critical stable” condition. He was riding out has his home compound where he was training for X-Games Speed And Style when he took a serious fall and broke vertebrae in his back and neck, injured both collarbones, lacerated his kidney, and has been having liver complications in the hospital ever since. Mike had also recently had a bad crash at the Sony Ericsson FMX Jam in Bratislava, Slovakia in June where he fractured 10 ribs, a collarbone and his scapula. Our question to the X-Games would be why are you allowing an athlete that had a very serious injury the month before compete before he is completely healed? Oh that’s right we forgot that X-Games cares more about money then the safety of their athletes. For further comments on that check out this article.

Mike is expected to make a full recovery, but lasting compilations seem almost inevitable with a injury this serious right on top of a previous one. Action Recon would like to send our thoughts to Mike and his family and we all wish him a speedy recovery process

Grassroots Productions Begins Principle Photography for Locally Sponsored Maui Motocross Documentary

DIRTculture is a feature documentary that will present the introduction and evolution of the rapidly growing motocross scene on Maui. The film will explore every aspect of the sport through the point-of-view of four local riders, including mental and physical preparation, maintenance, riding track and trail, the economic and social impact on Maui and the growing pains of the rapidly developing local scene.

Although the motocross scene on Maui is new relative to the history of the sport, its fusion with the riders & culture of Hawaii poses a unique story. Join us as we strive to capture that story by following our facebook page www.facebook.com/DIRTculturemaui and visiting our website www.dirtculturemaui.com

All other classes – $50 + 10

Additional classes $20 each (max 3 classes in one day per racer)

from every racer with all the classes you’re running with ski and race numbers included. In the past I asked for one entry per class you were running. Now I only need 1 form per racer, but you have to check all additional classes you are running if it applies! Advance payment via paypal helps me out and speeds things up on race day, but its not as crucial as the entry forms!!! I need a completely filled out

The $10 reservoir day use fee will be collected separately at registration on race day.

.

Note –

Pre-entry registration closes at 9pm Friday night july 22nd.

ALL entries on site on race day are now $75 regardless of class.

Pits – Camping

Although camping is generally not allowed at Berenda, the city is making an allowance for DJSA racers traveling with self contained RV’s or Toy Haulers to camp at the lake. There are no hookups, and all rigs must be self contained. The charge to camp overnight is $10 per vehicle which I will collect onsite.

I will have camp passes for all vehicles staying at the site overnight. I will be onsite Saturday afternoon through Sunday, and will be in charge of all persons camping overnight. The gate will be locked at 10pm Saturday night so if you are camping overnight please let me know in advance so I can reserve you a camp space. There will be a designated location for camping. When you arrive please contact me so we can get you set up.

We may get the go ahead for campfires, but I will have to check with the city.

NO GLASS CONTAINERS ARE ALLOWED AT THE RESERVOIR.

Alcohol is prohibited at this site, especially on race day.

Please join me in making a good impression with this new venue so that we are invited back!

If you’re going to party Saturday night regardless of where you are – please be RESPONSIBLE!

Snack Shack

Chowchilla is no stranger to state budget cuts, and they are operating at rock bottom just like most other cities and agencies in the state. Rather than see the lake facility shut down, the Chowchilla Lyons Club stepped up and offered to take over the care and upkeep of the facilities. To offset costs, the Lyons Club runs a snack shack at the site. They will be open for us all day long serving cold sodas, water, snacks, hotdogs, hamburgers, and tri-tip sandwiches.

DJSA’s Hope and Jill will have breakfast snacks available for you in the morning, but keep in mind the Lyon’s Club snack shack will be open the majority of the day for all our participants.

There are also several restaurants, fast food stores, and a STARBUCKS all within close distance to the reservoir.

Hotel Rooms

There are numerous hotels located within minutes of the race site.

3 of the nicest I saw were the Holiday Inn Express, The Chowchilla Inn, and the Comfort Inn, all located right off 99 at the Chowchilla exit. I am not making any group reservations until a few other issues are resolved, but I know how resourceful you guys are and I’m confident you’ll score some good rates. If you do, please post where you’re staying so others can try and book as well. This link might help you out…

http://www.californiahotels.com/city/chowchilla/

Ambulance Standby

The City is mandating that a Paramedic Ambulance be onsite during all racing, but the City is also helping us out by covering half the cost of the standby so that this extra expense is easier for us to cover. Some city staff members are anticipated to visit the site on race day. If you get the opportunity, please introduce yourselves and thank them for the warm welcome they have given us and for allowing our races to come to their city. Believe me when I say the this warm welcome is rare to find, and it has been a pleasure working with Chowchilla in making this event a reality on short notice. Please join me in putting on another great show of racing for them and their residents.

Pit Vehicles

Pit vehicles are not normally allowed at Berenda, but the city understands that many of you need them for launching purposes. Berenda has a nice concrete ramp that I would like to use primarily for the sitdowns, but lakeside launching for the standups and sport skis can easily be accomplished with a pit vehicle or hand cart. ATV pit vehicles will be allowed for launching purposes only at the launchramp or lakeside, but they will be restricted to a designated travel area and a speed of 5 mph. Everything is so close at this location, you will not need a pit vehicle for transportation to restrooms or vehicle parking areas. ATV’s will be used for launching purposes only, and if any joyriding is observed, all atv’s will be prohibited. Please join me in being responsible and abiding by the city’s request.

Starts

Band Starts on the Beach.

Holders must have helmet, eye protection, pfd, and footwear – no exceptions.

Standups and X2’s – engines running.

Sitdowns – dead engine lanyard in hand – racer at the back of the ski.

Please note – any racer caught using a cheater lanyard not attached to their person will be DQ’d for the rest of the day and docked 50 series points.

Please race like the pros you are, and don’t put me in a bad position…

Split start leads into a right first turn.

Far right side of the red and yellow start gates is the inside pole position.

Start gate positions WILL BE based on order of pre-entries received.

Start line officer will call your name in order of pre-entrys received and you will choose your place on the line. Late entries positions will be the last to choose position on the gate.

Course –

Red buoys – left turns / Yellow buoys – right turns

White with solid color designates start and end of a split lane

Please race smart and go around the buoys without hitting them!

Penalty Buoys –

The penalty “walk of shame” buoys will be in effect and must be taken at NO WAKE SPEED from the first one to the second one, and only then – can you re-enter the course at race speed if NO OTHER RACERS ARE WITHIN 100 Ft!

We have 3 simple rules here –

The mandatory 1 ski length safe zone in effect at all times

The 100 ft yield rule

And no passing or scoring in a yellow flag corner

If you are unclear as to the safety rules we run, they are all outlined at www.diablojsa.com

Knowing them in advance will keep you from being DQ’d in a race, and in a point series – that’s not what you want to have happen! Call or email me if you are unclear about the rules.

Junior Racer Time Trials -

At DJSA we do not run a juniors class for competitive course racing, but to show our kids we dig them, they are being allowed to run point series time trials at select venues on the calendar. On Sunday we will be holding round 3 of the DJSA Junior Racer Time Trials competition.

Ages are 7 to 16 years of age.

All junior racers must compete on 850 or under standup skis.

All juniors must register on race day accompanied by their parents.

Entry fee for the juniors is $10

All juniors must have proof of medical coverage to be presented by parents at registration.

Juniors will run time trial practice during the break after the 1st round of heats.

Juniors will compete during the break after the 2nd round of heats.

The course the juniors will run is attached.

Please print it out and help them become familiar with it.

Xtreme 550 all out racers -

If you are a regular series racer, there is no entry fee for the xtreme 550 all out class, only the $25 in the cash can to get on the startline. If you are not a series racer, the cost to run the xtreme class is $25, plus the $25 to get on the line.

Please make sure -

A minimum of 8″ or larger race numbers are required on every ski. (larger is better!)

If a race number is duplicated – one racer will add initial of last name

All Skis MUST HAVE a tow loop attached to the bow

No numbers – no tow loop – no racing – no exceptions! (this goes for practice as well)

Please help us make the day go faster…

When you hear your class announced as being “on deck” for staging, that is the time to gear up, start your ski, and warm it up on the west side of the lake. When you are called to staging, you will go immediately to the beach to the right of the startline and get your assigned position. When the class on the line takes off on their heat, you will slide over and take your position on the line. Once you check in at staging there is no leaving your ski, or the beach. The only place you’ll go is 25 ft to the left to get on the startline.

Need to warm up your ski?

Please do it when your class is “on deck for staging”

Please remember –

otherwise I’ll have to remember for you and trust me – you don’t want that.

One Ski length safe zone rule in effect at all times – no exceptions

* 100 ft yield rule in effect at all times – no exceptions

* Penalty buoys will be in place – NO CIRCLEING BACK TO MAKE UP BUOYS!

* Reckless or negligent racing are grounds for leaving early and/or suspension from the series.

* Unsportsmanlike conduct of any kind, on or off the water, is an invite to leave early and/or face suspension

from the series.

* No alcohol permitted until the END of the race day.

* All racers must be 18 years of age unless accepted into djsa internship program

* All racers must have proof of current medical insurance available.

* Please observe the NO WAKE zone when transiting from the launch ramp to the pit dock.

* No fueling on the water without fuel pads or you will have to pull your ski from the water. I will have them fuel pads available at the riders meeting and on the flag dock.

* NO GLASS CONTAINERS are allowed at Berenda!!!

Racing hard and racing fast will always have my admiration, and although winning is cool – winning doesn’t always make you a winner. Racing clean, and racing safe while watching out for your fellow brother and sister on the race course is what makes you a winner – and in turn you’ll always have my sincere respect.

Course diagram is attached with previous post.

Please become familiar with it before race day.

As always, please call or email with any questions.

Thanks for your support – and your interest!

I look forward to seeing you all at the “Thrilla in Chowchilla!

My 2 favorite words – “Lets Race!”

Dustin Charrier: The ‘Young Gun’ of Pro Runabout open
By KAY SYKES
Special to

Today’s News-Herald
Published Sunday, July 10, 2011 6:06 AM MST
LAKE HAVASU CITY — All young guns of racing have to begin somewhere. For Dustin Charrier the life of eating and breathing the world of personal watercraft racing began at the age of six, when his father, Dean Charrier, started to get involved with the racing scene. By the time he was 8-years-old, Dustin Charrier traveled from state to state as his father raced the IJSBA National Tour.

Kay Sykes Photo/Special to News-Herald. Dustin Charrier, of Orlando, Fla., races the professional division during the 2010 Quakysense World Finals on Lake Havasu. Charrier was able to go home with a second place trophy.

In 2003, at the age of 13, Dustin started out in the junior ski class. By the time he turned 16-years-old he was ready for the world of high speed and power when Dean put him on board a runabout for the beginner class at a small local race in Ohio. Quickly moving up in ranking he was able to finish out the year with a world title in the Novice Runabout Limited class.

In 2008, Dustin and his family were settled in the small town of Noblesville, Ind., with a population just shy of 52,000, but bigger and better things were waiting for them in Florida, and the opportunity for more practice time and training for his next national or world title.

It was that same year that the young man went on to win another world title, but this time at the pro-am level, in the runabout limited class.

2010 was the year for Dustin. Being a year older and more in shape he was able to join the ranks with the best of the best in the Pro Runabout open class. Winning sporadically on the local circuit, Dustin said he was focused on one thing — a world championship his first year as a pro.

The possibility was there. A Yamaha Factory team rider, Dustin had the best in the business supporting him – Dean’s team building him the fastest watercraft possible and Riva Racing providing the parts needed to make that happen.

The reward was a National Championship and an impressive second place finish at the 2010 Quakysense World Finals.

“My goal ever since I started racing runabout was to place top three in the world in Pro-Runabout Open. I came in second overall,” Dustin said.

Currently Dean’s team rider, Dustin is racing the 2011 UWP/IJSBA National Tour, running fourth in points behind the more seasoned professionals of Dustin Farthing, Erminio Iantosca and Trey Frame.

“I grew up watching guys like Dustin Farthing and Chris MacClugage battle it out on the race course. I used to love watching the pro’s race on the tour. I’ve been around it for most of my life, so racing and traveling feel like a normal life to me,” Dustin said.

Racing is not the only important thing for him though. Dustin is currently enrolled at Valencia Community College in Orlando and will be attending the University of Central Florida next summer, with his sights on a degree in engineering.

“I am so proud of him, how he has managed to maintain all of his grades during all these years of racing and continues to do so through his college years. I am a very proud mom,” said Donna Charrier.

Round 4 of the National tour was scheduled to take place this weekend in Rochester, N.Y., however the races were canceled. The next stop is scheduled for July 16-17 in Belle River, Alberta, Canada.

Dustin said he intends to participate again this year in the 2011 Quakysense World Finals, Oct. 1-9, at Crazyhorse Beach.

For more information about the World Finals, go to http://www.ijsba.com. National tour information may be found at http://www.uwpinc.com.
