Welcome to Diablo Jet Ski Action…

Home of the best outlaw pwc racing in Northern California!

DJSA started 5 years, 61 race days, and about 6400 laps ago, in the quest to bring a regular circut of pwc racing to the Bay Area waters of California. At the time there was only a handful of 3 or 4 races a year taking place and those were large scale events which attracted hot talent from across the United States, but for the amateur or beginning racer – these big events could be described as – intimidating. I never wanted to promote races – I wanted to race, but I was hoping to be able to participate in a full schedule of yearly races where you could have fun racing all year long, and then celebrate at a end of the year awards ceremony with all my friends – kind of like back in my motocross days…

I knocked on quite a few doors trying to generate interest from current promoters to start a local point racing series, but I quickly learned if you want to get something done, sometimes you have to get it done yourself. When I first started putting ideas together for DJSA, I wanted to see races run the way I would like to see them run if I were racing… Keep them SAFE, keep them FUN, and keep them AFFORDABLE - and that concept which started 4 years ago is still alive and strong going into our 5th season.

Because we sanction our own races – we are considered something I have become very proud of – an Outlaw Race Organization. Our points apply only to our own series, and do not apply to IJSBA or APBA pwc race events, but the 146 racers of season 4 brought the most exciting pwc racing we’ve ever seen to norcal and they all taught me one very important thing ~ It’s very cool to be an Outlaw!

Keeping it SAFE ~

In real life, I am a marine patrol officer working the waterways of my county with some great guys. One of the things I will never get accustomed to is seeing the horrific level of devastation a pwc collision can produce, and its all because of one thing – pwcs and jetskis have no brakes…

Watch the start of any motorcross race and its probably one of the coolest rushes to see on this planet. 25 bikes ripping handlebar to handlebar into one corner all at the same time. Nascar open wheel dirt cars - 24 Sprint cars in rows of 2 ripping past the green flag into turn-1, now thats hot! Go Karts, Snowmobiles, Mountain Bikes, doesn’t matter what you race, but most of this racing takes place on a ground surface and all these race vehicles have BRAKES…

But put any of these races onto a surface of ice and that first turn result is going to definately be exciting – but far from safe. There are no brakes on a pwc, there is no down shifting on a pwc, and when you let off on the throttle of a pwc, there is no steerage! Making matters worse, about the only protection a pwc racer wears is a helmet. Cool if you get hit in the head – not cool if you get hit anywhere else on your body…

There are a lot of people out there who will say “Rubbing is Racing”… normally we would agree, but with pwc racing we have to say “Rubbing is Dangerous” (unless you’re racing a nascar sprint cup car.) To keep things a little safer on the water our racing is “non-contact”. You can rip it anywhere you want on the course, you can pass anywhere you want on the course, you just won’t use another racer in your class as a berm!

We mandate all our racers to maintain a one ski length safe zone at all times. We mandate if a racer goes down they raise 1 hand, stay in place, and yield to any racers approaching within 100 ft. We encourage all racers to check on downed riders if the safety team isn’t already there and we reward good sportsmanship the same as we do the winners.

There is no racing or passing in a corner where there is a downed rider or safety ski rider engaged in a racer assist. The 5 member safety ski team “TEAM ORANGE” ride brightly painted Orange and White Yamahas and wear bright orange safety vest so there is no confusion as to who the safety guys are… The few rules we have we enforce with zero tolerance and it is refreshing to see the staff and racers alike – all working towards one goal… racing hard but racing safe!

Keeping it FUN ~

10 classes. Everything from the 650 and under standups, to the rolling thunder of the Super Charged Xtra Powered SCXP Pro/Am Supersits. X-2′s, Superjets, Freestyle, Novice Women Ski, Blasters, you name it we run it. At DJSA you are evaluated and placed into classes moreso on ability than the ski you’re on. For simplicity, our classes are designated by engine size and all classes are considered “open”. You can make any modifications you want to your ski as long as it remains within the engine size limit for the class, and as long as you can ride it!

6 classes of Skis and 4 classes of Sitdowns most always run morning practice by class, followed by 3 heats of racing for an overall score at the end of the day. Points are awarded for every class you ride, and the top 3 of each class are awarded photo plaques or trophies to take home. Points are tracked during the season in 2 areas - by class, and divisionally. At the end of the year awards

dinner, the top 5 racers from each class are recognized and honored with overall trophies, as well as the top 10 divisional point leaders from the Stands and the Sits receiving a little extra bling from contributing sponsors.

The top reigning standup and sitdown point leaders for past seasons have won cash, vacations, mexico cruises – and quad or mini sand rail kart pit vehicles. I don’t know what we’ll be running for this year because its getting more and more difficult trying to outdo the previous year, but if we award enough of these pit vehicles – we can have quad and kart races at “Jet Effect”!

“Jet Effect” is our rider appreciation race of the year that incorporates a saturday 100 mile enduro for the enduro guys, and short track racing, match slalom drags, and austrailan pursuits for the closed course guys. A rider appreciation BBQ is served, followed by R/C car racing under the lights at the water’s edge and then Sunday brings some of the most intense course racing of the season to the lake. Great racers with their crews and family, a great race staff, some pretty good tri-tip and chicken, and some off the hook R/C car dirt track racing make Jet Effect a very cool “double points” weekend not to be missed…

Keeping it AFFORDABLE ~

When something becomes too expensive, the fun gets taken out of it, and then you don’t want to do it anymore. How did we come up with $50 entrys for 3 heats of racing? Easy – its what I would want to pay if I were racing myself. No membership fees, no association fees, just be 18 years of age, have current medical insurance, have a seaworthy ski, sign our waiver, and Take It Out And Race It!

You ride an X2 or a 650? $40 for 3 heats of racing.

All other classes are $50 if you pre-reg, $60 on race day if you don’t.

Riding additional classes? $20 each class with a limit of 3 in a day.

A class incentive of $25 for novice women ski…$25 for the freestyle guys…

How about an occasional free entry for anyone sweeping 3 heats in a day.

$100 for 100 mile enduro races.

I know how much it takes for you to get to the race track on race days. I’ll always keep things as cheap as possible for you, just as long as you guys continue to race as safe as possible for me, and together we’ll look forward to seeing what season 5 brings us!

KEEPING IT AWESOME ~

Somehow DJSA has been blessed with having the BEST race staff you could ever ask for running the show and providing you with some awesome outlaw racing….

Warner Captures the Dana Point to Avalon Offshore Race
Presented by
Sea-Doo & Sea Tow

March 27, 2011

The 3rd Annual Dana Point to Avalon Offshore Race presented by Sea-Doo & Sea-Tow sanctioned by the APBA was a tremendous success despite one of the roughest races in the history of the Triple Crown series! Congratulations to Craig Warner #1 Corona, CA Monster Energy/Kawasaki on the overall win and 1st in Pro-Am Open with a time of 1 hour 10 minutes and 55 Seconds. 2nd Place went to past Triple Crown Offshore National Champion Mark Gerner with a time of 1 hour 15 minutes and 35 seconds. Rounding out the podium in 3rd overall and in the Pro/Am Class was Eric Hardin #5 Anaheim, CA on his Kawasaki Ultra 300X crossing the line just 10 seconds behind Gerner with a time of 1 hour 15 minutes and 45 seconds. Story weather conditions, low visibility, moderate to high swells all made for a rough race that really tested the racers and equipment from start to finish.

A big THANK YOU!!! to all of the sponsors that made the event possible: Sea-Doo, Sea-Tow, Kawasaki, Dana Point Jet Ski, Dana Point Shipyard, Mike Follmer Specialties, Gemmell’s.

Next, I would like to thank the RPM staff: Aaron Cress, Jay Littlejohn, Joe Culley, Leanne Arnold, Danielle Arnold, Nick Vanis and all the volunteers for all of your help!

Last but not least, a big Thank You to Mark Gerner, www.pwcoffshore.com and the So. The Pro Circuit Launch Control starting device has been completely re-designed for 2008 and offers better performance and ease of operation. Launch Control was developed to enhance traction by pre-loading the front forks during starts to prevent wheel spin. Machined from 6061-T6 aluminum for light weight and durability. Launch Controls are available for most Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki and KTM motorcycles.

The Honda Red Riders dominated round 11 of the AMA Supercross Championship in Jacksonville, FL, over the weekend with wins [...]

The Honda Red Riders dominated round 11 of the AMA Supercross Championship in Jacksonville, FL, over the weekend with wins in both the Supercross and Supercross Lites East classes. American Honda Racing’s Trey Canard won the Supercross race, recording his second Supercross-class win in his rookie season aboard his Honda CRF450R, while GEICO Honda’s Justin Barcia came out on top and scored his second victory of the season aboard his CRF250R.

After finishing second in his heat race, Canard got away to a good start in the main event, moving into the lead on the opening lap. Once out front, Canard held on to his lead for the majority of the race until fellow Honda racer TwoTwo Motorsports’ Chad Reed made a pass for the lead during the closing stages of the race. Canard retaliated and passed Reed that same lap to resume control out front and take the victory for the second time this season.

“I got a great start in the main tonight, which I’m pumped about because starts are something I’ve worked really hard to improve. And I’m ecstatic to get my second win of the season,” said Canard. “I was really fast on most areas of the track, but the whoops were a thorn in my side tonight. However, I definitely made up time by keeping low over the jumps and scrubbing hard. Reed was fast through the whoops, and he was there to capitalize on my mistakes. We had a good battle late in the race in which he passed me, and I got him right back. We battled to the very end, and I’m just stoked to put the American Honda Racing Team on top for the second time this season, plus it’s awesome to see Honda finish one-two on the podium.”

Canard’s fill-in teammate Cole Seely finished sixth in his heat race, and after getting a mid-pack start in the Supercross main had worked his way up into seventh position when he went down on lap five. Losing a lap in the fall, Seely recovered to finish a hard-fought 15th overall.

Reed put in a solid performance aboard his Honda CRF450R, moving into second position on the opening lap where he stayed for almost the entire race. Although Reed’s effort to clinch the top spot from Canard near the end of the race was not successful, his runner-up result was good enough to elevate him to second overall in the championship points chase. GEICO Honda’s Kevin Windham had his best showing of the season, finishing just shy of the podium in fourth place.

In the Supercross Lites East competition, GEICO Honda’s Justin Barcia recorded his second victory of the season, which extended his lead in the championship standings to 17 points. Barcia let off a hot start in the main by nabbing the holeshot. Despite racing with a broken wrist, Barcia then raced away to a commanding lead and led wire to wire to take the victory. Teammate Blake Wharton won convincingly in his heat race but crashed out of the Lites main event on lap four after going down hard in the whoops. Fellow Honda racers Darryn Durham, Les Smith and Taylor Futrell each had strong showings aboard their Honda CRF250Rs, rounding out sixth, seventh and eighth places, respectively.

What goes around, comes around. Bad things come in threes. What goes up must come down. You can’t win ‘em all. All’s fair in love and war.

There is an innate desire to boil life’s experiences down to easy-to-remember clichés. Our natural tendency is to view the events of our lives as cyclical, despite the obvious impossibility of all circumstances ever being repeated in the same exact pattern. But with scientific support in the form of lunar cycles, ant colonies and overly long Oscar ceremonies—the inherent tendency to see a cycle in our lives takes on more significance than simple coincidence can explain.

And that goes for the repetitive life of Roger DeCoster. The MXA wrecking crew sat down with Roger to discuss a life full of events, full of crises, full of change and full of new challenges. If it seems as though DeCoster is always repeating himself, perhaps life really is a merry-go-round.

In the interest of full disclosure, it should be noted that MXA has a special relationship with Roger DeCoster because he worked for us for two years (between Team Honda and Team Suzuki).

YOUR FIRST EXPERIENCE DEALING WITH A FACTORY TEAM CAME WHEN YOU RACED FOR CZ. TELL US HOW YOUR TIME AT CZ CAME TO AN END?

In 1970, I felt that I could run with Joel Robert and Sylvain Geboers. CZ wanted me to race in the 250 class to try to neutralize the new Suzuki team, which had hired Robert and Geboers away from them. They made me a lot of promises to support me and agreed to provide me with bikes, a mechanic and parts. They also agreed to pay me $5000. I’m still waiting for that check. The Suzukis were amazingly light and very fast compared to my CZ 250. My CZ could run with them on certain types of tracks, but there were always issues. My mechanic, all of the CZ mechanics really, would sell the rider’s parts on the way to the races. They pocketed the money. At the end of the 1970 season, I finished third overall. I felt that I was strong and could beat Joel and Sylvain—and I think the Japanese teams saw that too, because they started to talk to me about riding for them.

HOW DID SUZUKI APPROACH YOU?

It wasn’t like it is today. We were all very friendly and spent a lot of time socializing. After the last Grand Prix of 1970, Suzuki asked me if I would like to ride Joel Robert’s works Suzuki for a few laps on the track. It was a big step above my CZ. It ran clean off the bottom. On the CZ, we had to hold them wide open to clean them out and were often forced to lean the bike over to get it to run clean. The Suzuki was crisp and had great throttle response. The Suzuki’s Mikuni carb was superior to the CZ’s Jikov carb. When the Jikov was brand new, it was a good carb, but it wore out quickly because it was made from bad materials.

The CZ team—Roger DeCoster (front), Dave Bickers (back) and Joel Robert (right).

SO, YOU LEFT CZ. THEY DIDN’T PAY YOU, AND YOU MOVED TO SUZUKI?

Yes. Suzuki wanted me to race the 250 class with Joel Robert. Sylvain Geboers was going to race the 500 class. But, Sylvain didn’t want to race the 500 class because he didn’t think that the Suzuki 370 had been tested enough. So, even though they hired me as a 250 rider, I was moved to the 500 class for 1971. They sent me two bikes and some parts for the preseason races, but I didn’t see my actual race bike until the Friday of the first GP of the year in Italy. They sent two bikes, a mechanic and a translator. I went 1-1. It was the first time that a Japanese-built bike had won a 500 GP.

YOU HAD A NINE-YEAR RUN AT TEAM SUZUKI. WHY DID THE RELATIONSHIP SOUR?

Over my last few seasons with Suzuki, we hadn’t been winning. The guys who were running the team thought that they needed to get younger riders. I was 36 at the time, but I didn’t think that Gerard Rond or Jean-Jacque Bruno were better than I was. The bike just wasn’t as good as what Honda and Yamaha had.

Roger at the height of his powers.

DID SUZUKI FIRE YOU AT THE END OF THE 1979 SEASON?

No. I always thought that I was going to be with Suzuki for the rest of my career. Honda had talked to me several times before that about riding for them, but I told them that I was happy at Suzuki. Then, at the end of the 1979 season, I couldn’t get Suzuki to tell me anything. My contract was up for renewal, but every time I asked them about it, they shrugged it off. They wouldn’t tell me if they were going to renew the contract, but they also wouldn’t tell me that they weren’t. I was frustrated because my relationship with them had never been this cold.

HOW DID YOU END UP AT TEAM HONDA?

The next time Honda called, I told them that I might be interested in talking to them. They invited me to Japan. But, before I went to Honda, I flew to Hamamatsu to ask the Suzuki race managers about the 1980 season. They seemed embarrassed and wouldn’t give me an answer. So, I left Hamamatsu and went straight to Tokyo to meet with Team Honda. They made me a good offer. It wasn’t about the money, because they agreed to pay me the same amount that I was making at Suzuki, but they said that they would give me a three-year contract and that I could race one year, two years or three years, and when I was done racing they would give me a position in race management. They also said that I could test new bikes, work with young riders and have a career after my racing days were over.

SO, YOU SIGNED WITH TEAM HONDA FOR 1980?

Yes. I raced the 1980 GP series for Team Honda. I finished fifth overall and won the final Grand Prix of my racing career. Then, I flew to America to start working on the American team for 1981.

Roger at the USGP on a Honda.

HOW WERE YOUR 13 YEARS AT TEAM HONDA?

I had a fantastic time at Honda. We tried lots of creative things, won lots of races and set the standard by which all race teams were measured. Best of all, when the production rule was put into effect, Dave Arnold and I were heavily involved in the development of the production CRs. It was a great time.

There are many who still believe that DeCoster was the greatest of all-time.

BUT, JUST AS WITH CZ AND SUZUKI, IT ALL CAME TO AN END. WHAT HAPPENED AT HONDA?

In the 1990s, the sales department got more involved in racing. Honda started to change. It got harder to get things done. The men who hired me had moved to different departments. It just wasn’t the same as it was in the 1980s.

I had been there for a long time, and even though Team Honda was a great success, there were a lot of people at Honda who didn’t think that I was important. I can understand that on some level. The team was powerful. The bikes were good. We were winning. Although I felt that I had done a lot to make that happen, they just saw the success, not the people behind it. So, they didn’t renew my contract for 1993.

THAT’S WHEN THE MOST ILLUSTRIOUS PART OF YOUR CAREER HAPPENED.

It is true that working at MXA gave me the opportunity to take a break from the week-in/week-out grind of racing. I had never had any kind of normal schedule. Working for MXA was fun. It allowed me to test every bike made and see the sport from a different perspective. It was a good time.

BUT, YOU LEFT MXA?

Sylvain Geboers was running Suzuki’s Grand Prix team, and he contacted me about coming to work for Suzuki USA. He told me that Japan wanted me back. They asked me to come to Japan to talk about taking over Team Suzuki. They had all of the people that I worked with when I was at Suzuki in the 1970s meet me at a reception. It was like a reunion. It was very cool. It was a smart move on their part, because it made me forget the bad times with Suzuki and remember the good times.

SO, YOU CAME BACK TO SUZUKI AFTER BEING GONE FOR 15 YEARS?

They gave me a three-year contract. They made me a lot of promises about how things were going to be and the level of support they were going to supply. It all seemed so rosy, but when I got to U.S. Suzuki, I discovered that there wasn’t even a race shop. The team was working out of the back of the warehouse in the parking lot.

THAT HAD TO BE A SHOCK.

My first few years at Suzuki were very tough. I didn’t feel that the people at Suzuki—the bosses in Japan, the managers in America, the mechanics or the riders—believed that Suzuki could win. They had an inferiority complex. It’s hard to work for people who don’t want to put out a full effort.

BUT DIDN’T SUZUKI MAKE YOU PROMISES?

Yes, but my every move was thwarted because my bosses at U.S. Suzuki wouldn’t fight for the budget we needed to be competitive. We were just treading water.

Roger spent many years at Suzuki as a World Champion and a team manager.

WHAT TURNED SUZUKI AROUND?

In 1997, we got Jeremy McGrath. He came to the team very late, and the bike wasn’t very good. It needed some work, but Suzuki fought the changes we needed. We were still running the Showa conventional forks. I told them that we needed the stiffer upside-down forks, but they said that their test riders didn’t think so. I told them that their test riders weren’t hitting the kind of jumps that American Supercross riders were, and that the whole process of testing in Japan wasn’t rigorous enough to build a bike for an AMA Pro. Shockingly, Jeremy could have won the 1997 Championship. He had some issues with Steve Lamson at the Los Angeles Coliseum and a flat tire at Charlotte and, in the end, we only lost the Supercross Championship by seven points.

THAT SEEMED LIKE A GOOD START, WHY DIDN’T IT WORK OUT?

The whole process demoralized Jeremy McGrath. He really didn’t even put out a full effort in the 1997 AMA Nationals. To keep him for 1998, I needed to be able to get the full support of the Japanese factory. I asked for it, but they ignored my requests. I told them that if I couldn’t offer Jeremy a better bike, more technical help and a full commitment, I couldn’t keep him. They didn’t respond.

WHAT HAPPENED WHEN JEREMY LEFT?

It had a negative impact on the whole company. It severely damaged our reputation—which wasn’t that good before that. As always, once the Suzuki executives in Japan heard that Jeremy signed with Yamaha for 1998, they called me and told me to offer him $1,000,000. That horse had already left the barn. It wasn’t about the money. It was about the bike and the team.

Roger with Jeff Stanton at the Motocross des Nations in 1989.

WERE YOU BACK TO ZERO AFTER THE JEREMY DEAL WENT BAD?

Yes and no. Our bikes started to get better and better in the 1990s. Unfortunately, we couldn’t attract the best talent because of our reputation. We had a bunch of riders who didn’t amount to much, but our race bikes kept getting better, even when we didn’t have good riders. There were some bright spots. We had Travis Pastrana win a 125 title in 2000, but Travis was more interested in being famous. Between the concussions, the freestyle and his parents, he squandered what could have been a great racing career. Then, Greg Albertyn won the 250 title in 1999. He always gave it his all.

HOW DID YOU LAND RICKY CARMICHAEL?

One thing that a racer always knows is how good his competition’s bikes are. He may not be riding that bike, but he can tell when a competitor’s bike goes through the whoops better, is faster off the start or turns inside lines. Even though we weren’t winning races, Ricky saw that our bikes were working.

ARE YOU SAYING THAT MONEY WASN’T AN ISSUE IN SIGNING CARMICHAEL?

Riders who make deals for money aren’t as smart as ones who make deals for the best bike. Ricky is smart. He raises the game of the people around him. He gives his all, and he demands it from the people around him. Ricky was good for Suzuki.

AND WINNING EVERYTHING COULDN’T HAVE HURT?

Once Ricky started winning, the atmosphere at the team changed.

BUT, SUZUKI DID THE SAME THING TO YOU IN 2010 THAT THEY DID TO YOU IN 1979, DIDN’T THEY?

Yes. In a way, my end at Suzuki in 2010 was the same as 1980. I felt, just as I had in 1979, that I was going to end my career with Suzuki.

WHAT HAPPENED THIS TIME?

In recent years, I have been managing the team and doing the sponsorship deals. I had formed a good relationship with Rockstar and Makita. It was a give-and-take relationship that was working for all of us, but there were people at Suzuki that seemed opposed to the outside sponsors. They didn’t want to give the sponsors what they needed. They didn’t understand that a deal is a deal.

FOR EXAMPLE?

Take Ken Roczen. I had always planned for Ken Roczen to get full factory support from Suzuki when he made the move to the USA to race Supercross. But, as the time got close, Suzuki wanted me to put him at Bill Keefe’s support team. Bill has done a great job with his team, but that isn’t what we promised Ken. He was a Grand Prix winner who raced for the Suzuki factory team in Europe, and he had been promised that he would get full factory support. I wanted to live up to my word.

There were other issues where it was obvious that Suzuki and I weren’t on the same page.

AND THEN YOUR CONTRACT CAME UP FOR RENEWAL?

I want to be clear that at no time during my time at Team Suzuki had I ever had a one-year deal. So, when contract time came up, I asked Suzuki to have a meeting with me. They told me that I had to meet with Yoshimura—not them. I had a good working relationship with Yoshimura, but I worked for Suzuki.

AND WHAT DID YOSHIMURA TELL YOU?

They told me that I could only get a one-year deal. I told them that I wanted a three-year deal.

THEN WHAT?

I waited to hear back. In the meantime, I finalized the sponsorship deal with Rockstar and made plans for 2011.

WERE YOUR CONTRACT TROUBLES WITH SUZUKI ABOUT THE MONEY?

No. The one-year deal was actually for less money than I was making. I understand the recession and was willing to accept less. A pay cut was no problem—if it was part of a three-year contract.

IS IT TRUE THAT RYAN DUNGEY WENT TO BAT FOR YOU?

Yes. Ryan sent a letter to Suzuki asking if I would be there in 2011 and expressing his personal concerns. They told him that I would be there.

BUT YOU AREN’T AT SUZUKI ANYMORE.

My old friend Selvaraj Narayana, who works at KTM, had heard through the grapevine that I didn’t have a deal with Suzuki. He called and arranged for me to talk to Pit Beirer, who is in charge of all of KTM’s racing programs.

Roger and the team he raised from the ashes.

DID YOU SIGN ON THE SPOT?

No. I felt that perhaps Suzuki was just waiting for Ryan Dungey to clinch the 450 National title before they talked to me about my 2011 contract. When all the brass from Suzuki showed up at Southwick to watch Ryan clinch the 450 National Championship, I was sure that they would take the time to sit down with me and work out my contract. They didn’t. They just didn’t want to talk to me.

THEN YOU SIGNED WITH KTM?

Two days after Ryan clinched the 2010 AMA 450 National Championship, I had a three-year offer from KTM. I agreed. Just as it had happened with Jeremy McGrath, Suzuki called me immediately after hearing that I was signing with KTM and offered me a three-year deal. It was too little, too late. I had given KTM my word.

HOW DID YOU FEEL ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU AT SUZUKI?

In many ways I was bummed out. We built this thing together. For many years we struggled, but over the last six years we have been the winningest factory team in the sport. I think that the Japanese managers don’t see a problem until it is in full crisis mode.

WE HATE TO BREAK IT TO YOU, BUT ISN’T TEAM KTM REALLY THE SAME AS TEAM SUZUKI IN 1994 IN TERMS OF MACHINERY, RESPECT AND CONFIDENCE?

There is some repetition in life. The events with Suzuki in 2010 are reminiscent of the events in 1979. And the fledgling KTM team is very much like what I inherited in 1994 at Suzuki. The difference is that KTM expects to win. They have been winning in Europe, and even though the parallels between the USA and Europe aren’t that great, they want to succeed—maybe not the first year, but eventually.

DOES KTM UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCES?

I think that Pit Beirer does. He understands that to live up to American standards they have to make changes. There is a learning curve, but it is tougher than they think it is. To go from where they have been in America (remember that in 2010 they only had Mike Alessi and Tommy Searle) to a full-on team is going to take more effort than imaginable.

As it was and evermore shall be—The Man.

BUT THE JAPANESE DID IT, DIDN’T THEY?

In Japan the engineers had 30 years to get on the same page as the American riders, tracks and teams. Maybe the decision makers in Japan are out of touch, but my working relationship with their engineers was always very good. KTM really doesn’t have 30 years of Supercross experience to fall back on. But they want to learn.

SPEAKING OF REPETITION IN LIFE, THIS IS YOUR SECOND GO-AROUND WITH MIKE ALESSI. WHAT’S THE DEAL?

When the news came out that I was coming to KTM, I ran into Mike and his dad, Tony. They came up and asked me if they were “out” at KTM. I told them that we had an agreement and that I would give Mike my total support, but that I wanted Tony to take a step back. Mike’s dad doesn’t have his own life; he lives through his kids. He means well, but this is a professional business, and my business is with Mike—not him.

WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH MIKE AND SUPERCROSS?

There is a clause in his contract that says that he can race Supercross if he wants to, and that we can’t force him to do it if he doesn’t want to. I think that he should race, but this time he should take my advice and set realistic goals. There is no shame in being a top-ten Supercross guy. It is pointless to try to win races that you aren’t ready to win. It is futile and dangerous. He needs to set goals for 2011, bigger goals for 2012 and then give it his all when the time is right. In that way he is a lot like Greg Albertyn. Greg was too proud and too competitive to relax and take the Supercross results that he deserved. Greg tried to force it all the time. He should have settled for a top-ten finish and gotten into the rhythm of Supercross. Instead, he got hurt all the time—which made him try harder the next time. Greg could have been a good Supercross rider, and so can Mike, but they have to do the right thing at the right time.

Andrew Short. Photo: Hoppenworld

TELL US WHY YOU HIRED ANDREW SHORT.

I think Andrew Short is the perfect choice for KTM at this time. He didn’t fulfill his expectations when he was at Team Honda, but since he hasn’t won, he has less pressure on him to carry the team. He can use his time at KTM to become a winner. Budget-wise, he was a good deal. Plus, I was looking for a solid American rider. I already have foreign riders in Ken Roczen and Marvin Musquin, and I couldn’t justify hiring a Christophe Pourcel (even if I could afford the price he was asking) or any other foreign rider. This is an American team, and I wanted an all-American rider that would represent the sponsors and KTM in the best light.

NOW THAT THE SUPERCROSS SEASON IS WINDING DOWN, HOW WOULD YOU SAY THAT KTM IS IN TERMS OF WHERE YOU THOUGHT YOU’D BE?

I think that we have come very close to what I foresaw before the season started.

WHAT IS YOUR VIEW OF THE OUTDOOR SERIES COMING UP?

Going into the 2011 Nationals the question mark for us it how fit Marvin Musquin will be. He has been waiting to ride and will only have a month to get ready before the first race. The people who have experience with him, say that this will be no problem, but American races are different from European ones—in terms of tactics and riding styles. A lot rides on Marvin in the 250 class.

WHAT DO YOU FORESEE FOR ANDREW SHORT IN THE 450 CLASS?

I expect him to be stronger in the outdoors than in Supercross. He will be more comfortable on the bike and since we have done some outdoor testing, we should be ready.

WILL MIKE ALESSI BE ON THE 450SXF?

I’m giving him the choice of bikes, but I’m certain that he will go with the 450SXF and Short will stay on the 350SXF—that is okay because KTM sells both of them.

DO YOU THINK THAT 250 TWO-STROKES SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO RACE AGAINST 250 FOUR-STROKES?

Yes. I think it would be fine. The two-stroke makes more horsepower, but it makes it over a narrower range, while the four-stroke makes less power, but has a broad powerband. I think they are equal machines. The two-stroke would be better in sand and deep loam, while the four-stroke would be better on harder dirt. It takes a more talented rider to race the two-stroke and I can see where it would be difficult for most of the current 250 four-stroke riders to make the change. I’d wouldn’t oppose a rule change.

OF ALL THE RIDERS YOU HAVE WORKED WITH, WHOM ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

Ryan Dungey. I’m very proud of my time with riders like Ricky Carmichael, Jean-Michel Bayle, Jeremy McGrath and Ricky Johnson, but they were established stars. My role in their careers was to help them, but not to mold them. In Ryan, I had a kid from the very early stage of his career all the way to the top. I was proud to be able to give him the things he needed to show what he was capable of. I didn’t give him the talent—I just gave him the chance.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE METHODS THAT HAVE MADE YOU SUCCESSFUL?

It may sound funny, but I think that one of my strengths is that I’m a slow learner. I don’t like change. I go to the same restaurant all the time. When I get to that restaurant, I eat the same food every time. I’m steady, but I’m determined. Once I learn that something is good, I never forget it.

Jimmy Button’s M4M Cross Country Ride: Week 2-3 Update

Scottsdale, AZ (March 14, 2011)–After completing week 3 of their journey across the country, we had a chance to catch up with Jimmy Button and the Miles 4 Miracles crew now that they are in Texas.

“At the end of week 2 we were coming into Las Cruses, New Mexico and we were attempting to do 100 miles that day. It was windy and we caught a big gust of wind and it ran me off the road and I had a pretty massive crash at about 20 mph. I cartwheeled over the bars and fortunately walked away with only a bunch of raw skin and bruises. After the crash, which was at mile 88, we rode another 5 miles before my body just could not take it anymore so we called it a day. The following day we had an easy ride down to El Paso and I already planned a trip back to California to see to see my doctor on Sunday so the break came at just the right time. The great news was that I was 100% okay, besides being banged up and I was able to continue on Monday. “

“Monday started out with massive 35-45mph crosswinds the entire day and we were only able to make 80% of our ride because the wind and the sand were so bad and our average speed dropped significantly. It felt like someone was sand blasting us the entire time. With as bad as it was on Monday, Tuesday came with great weather and smooth roads and we were able to finally get in a 100 mile day. This was an important milestone for us as we had planned to do this at some point during the ride. For me personally it is a big checkmark on my bucket list. I definitely paid for it the following day, but it was well worth it.

“On Wednesday we went from Kent, Texas to Fort Davis and had a pretty good ride, but had really bad roads. We have a map that tells us about the mountain ranges and the grades and it was completely off. We thought we had a day of 3%-4% grades to look forward to and we actually were faced with 10-13% grades all day. It was massive!”

“We are making our way. Our biggest obstacle has been the roads and the wind. We either get decent roads or really, really rough roads. Today we had an 18mph headwind the entire day. The views have been great and we just watched the sunset and it is magnificent. As of today we are about 44 miles behind schedule due to the unbelievable bad roads and wind, but we hope to be caught up and back on schedule by Houston.”

Jimmy’s goal is to raise $1 Million dollars for spinal cord research, and he has only reached about 20% of his goal. No donation is too big or small. Please help spread the word so Jimmy can reach his goal. Together we can make a difference in the life of a spinal cord injury patient. This injury is tough to live with, not only for the injured person, but their family and friends as well.

Jimmy is about 45%% through his ride!! You can join him on his quest by signing up at Join the Ride and to see when he will coming through your area at the ride on the www.milesformiraclestoday.com website.
