10 Absolute MX Practice Tips by Gary Semics

In order to improve your race results, you first must improve your practice strategies. Then practice the correct techniques until they become automatic.

Absolute rule number 1 - There’s a mind to the madness. When you go out to practice have a purpose behind your practice. Don’t just race around the track, making the same mistakes over and over. Always spend some time separating and working at your weak points and techniques.
Now that we’ve got that right, here’s tip number one of a ten quick tips series on how to become a better racer.

#1 You need to be able to work the levers and hold onto the grips independently.
The most common mistake here is to hold onto the grips with all four fingers than grab at the levers only when you really have to use them. This way is so award that the rider doesn’t use the clutch and front brake levers often enough and when they do use the levers they can’t hold onto the grips well.

The thing that takes time and practice to develop is the ability to hold onto the grips and work the levers accurately at the same time, many riders use two fingers on the clutch, and many use one finger. It’s best to use one finger on the front brake. Get used to it and make it a habit.Give up a finger or two on the grips in order to work the levers independently from holding onto the grips.

#2 When you’re not using the shifter or brake the ball of your foot should be on the foot peg.
A general rule to go by is that if you’re not using the shifter or brake you should be on the balls of your feet. When you need to use the shifter or brake simply move up to the arches of your feet, than when you’re not using the shifter or brake move back to the balls of your feet again. While you are riding you should be using this technique frequently changing back and forth. This is true whether sitting or standing.

The benefits are: it adds another joint to your body’s suspension (your ankle joint) for better movement and feel, your feet won’t hit the ground in ruts and get ripped off the foot pegs, and you won’t hit the shifter or brake by accident. The only exception to this technique is if you are going to land very hard (like casing a jump) then you should be on the arches of your feet so you don’t sprain or break your ankles. This is defiantly one of those techniques that you have to think about and practice separately. Keep checking the bottom of those boots.

World Finals Race Director Lost at Sea

Intense Search & Rescue Efforts Underway for Jeremy Holland

November 5, 2008

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Racers and family,
Some of you already know about the Search & Rescue effort approaching the 2 week mark in Indonesia, but many do not. I would like to take advantage of my e-mail list to update the Region 2 and 1 racing family, and ask all of you to help support the search for Jeremy Holland.
For those of you hearing about this for the first time now, Jeremy, was in Bali to officiate the PWC events at the Asian Beach Games. On Friday, October 25th, while on a “rec” ride, his ski broke down and he was lost at sea. Go to www.IJSBA.com and www.PWCToday.com for the official and unofficial reports and updates.
A quick update is that they have been searching extensively for the last 12 days with helicopters and boats, and there is still much reason to believe he is waiting out there somewhere to be rescued. Even Sir Richard Branson from Virgin Airlines has dedicated funds and a helicopter or two.
For those of you that don’t know Jeromy Holland, he has been the starting line race director at the IJSBA World Finals the past 3 years, and is a past British racer himself. After working with him 2 of those years in Havasu, I can honestly say he always did everything he could for the racers and for the sport.
What I am asking with this e-mail… picture yourself lost out there on the beach in Indonesia. Or picture one of our Region 1 or 2 family members out there. If we all donate $20-$100 a piece, that could give Jeremy’s wife, 2 daughters, brother, and the rest of the S&R crew many more hours of helicopter and plane time to find him. I know if i were out there I would be praying that people would give that little bit to get me off that “Surviror-Bali” island.
SO… Click here to go directly to the PayPal Donation Site*. It is really easy, and you don’t have to have a paypal account, all you need is you CC number. I just donated $50, and it was easy. *This donation fund is approved/supported by the IJSBA and Shawn Alladio of K38 Rescue.
You can also Click Here to view the website set up by the family where you can get additional information about donating and leave a note for the famly if you would like.
Thank you all for sticking together through tough times, I hope everyone is doing great, and I look forward to see you all out on the water sooner than later.
Pit report from Team Danzio’s Racing from Vince Rothermond
Vegas to Reno Race
When I think back to being a kid and having dreams of what I wanted to do with my life, I can only remember two things that come to mind: cowboy or race car driver. What did I choose…Pharmaceuticals. Not even close to my dreams, but it pays the bills.
On August 21st, I was lucky enough to get a little closer to one of my dreams. I was given a chance form Team Danzio to pit for their Class 1 car during the BITD Vegas to Reno race. I hadn’t been that excited about anything since Mauler talked me into trying out motocross. I had no idea what to expect, but learned in three days more about being a part of team then I had experienced in my whole life. From the qualifying runs (that we placed 4th overall, 2nd out of Class 1 cars) to the time our car crossed the finish line in Reno, I was a key player in the Danzio team. Granted, I am not the MOST mechanical person on the team. I was given the
chance to change a couple tires, pump and dump several 11 gallon gas cans (this turned out to be my primary function), and even replace a serpentine belt that had been shredded. I was able to ride shotgun in one of four chase trucks with my buddy Troy and his son Corey…two of the best pit buddies a guy could ask for!
The adventure was long, hot, and tiring, but worth every minute! In the end, our car placed 14th in class. It was the team/car’s first finish of a race and I was a part of it. Thanks to the entire team for allowing me the chance to participate and I hope to get out there at the end of this month to pit again!
Am I sad that I am not a cowboy or a race car driver? The answer is no. I will continue to be the weekend warrior motocross racing Pharmaceutical specialist who HELPS race car drivers finish races. That sounds pretty good to me! - Vince
SXS Nationals — Pictures from Aug 9 @ Perris Auto Speedway
RAZORS COMING ON STRONG IN M4SX RACING
Nice write up by DUNE DUMMY 29
Round #6 Was Held Saturday Night @ Perris Auto Speedway. I Am Sure I Will Get Slammed For This But I Thought The Track Was Good. I Think The Fans Got A Good Show & The Racers All Seemed To Have A Good Time. We Were The Pace Rhino For The Whole Show Which Was One Of The Coolest Things We Have Ever Done. We Would Take The Racers Around The Track Once Then Duck In By The Tow Trucks & Watch The Race. We Only Had To Tow 2 Vehicles & I Never Had To Run To Flag For A Wreck Or Turn Over One Vehicle I Loved It. Dune Bunnie Told Me She Really Enjoyed It Too & She Thought The Track Was Great & There Were Some Great Races. Todd “King” Arthur Smoked Everyone In The Pro Mod Class. Chad Mittag Broke So He Never Started The Main. Regis Harrington Wasn’t There & Todd Cunningham Limped His Wounded Rhino Around To Finish & Get Some Precious Points. So The Battle For 2nd, 3rd & 4th Is Pretty Wide Open. Todd Arthur Has A Pretty Good Points Lead With Only 2 Races To Go. I Want To Give Props To Ryan Ingham Driving The #70 Pro Mod Rhino. He Was 3rd Going Into The 1st Corner & Got Blocked & Stopped. He Came Out In Last Place.
He Put On A Heck Of A Show Coming Back To 4th. Then He Had A Another Problem. I Don’t Know Where He Finally Finished But He Definitely Passed More Cars Than Anyone. Congrats Ryan On A Great Ride & For Putting On A Show For The Fans. Code Rahders (dnf73’s 13 Rear Old Son) Was Doing Really Well In The Superstock Class Until He Came Around A Blind Corner & Hit A Stalled Car Breaking His Steering. Motogary Was In 4th But Leading His Class When He Broke On The Backstretch. I Think Planet Sidxside Members Did Us All Proud. The Trophy Karts Put On A Great Show. They Had Passing , Crashing & More Passing. The Announcers Said They Were The Best Races Of The Night. The Winner Of One Of The TK Races Did A Donut After The Race & Flipped. Then Another One Did A Donut & Flipped On Top Of Another Racecar. The Crowd Loved It & The Kids Were Fine. I Want To Thank The Track Owners & The Satff For Providing Us With Such A Great First Rate Facility. They Were On The Ball When Ever There Was An Incident. It Was Neat To See How Fast The Safety Personel: Ambulance, Tow Trucks & Fire Truck Got To The Accidents. There Weren’t Too Many Delays In The Show & We Were Done By 10:18 P.M. I Really Enjoyed The Track. I Know Everyone Would Like Bigger Jumps, But I Think That With The Off Camber Switchback Corners & The Jumps That They Did Have It Made For A Fast Track But Still Technical. I Liked It & Dune Bunnie Loved It. See You Guys @ Rd. # 7 September 6th @ Perris Auto Speedway. The Racing Was Great, The Bathrooms Were Very Nice & The Pizza Was Great. Thanks PAS & M4SX / Dirt Alliance.
